never heard about it. And the story, if it happened, could have been slightly different. Germany never had M151s (we had the Munga, Iltis and Wolf), the US Army in Germany had them. So if anybody shipped them to Malta, it was more likely the US Army.

It's true. When the US Reserve Storage Activity base at Burtonwood, England, closed down in 1993, the US military donated their reserve stock of M151A2s to Malta and Mexico. Most of the vehicles that were in storage at the time were very low-mileage A2s. One was donated to the Burtonwood Association in nearby Warrington.... our G838 colleague Jay Mallari has been to see it.

Here's a photo of one of the Malta mutts, in use by the Ministry of Works there, plus a photo of one used by the Malta military.
As far as I know, none came from Germany.

The Malta mutts had a VERY hard life. They must have been driven into the sea every other day. Eventually what was left was sold off. A dealer on the island bought several but you can see from the photos that they had been neglected. Here's what they looked like in 2005. A couple of these were brought back to the UK but the buyer had bought them "sight-unseen" and was very disappointed when they reached him.

See below..... Robert, an officer in the Malta mil, made a spectacularly good job of restoring the one he bought.

Of coarse, what did the Maltese government care? They got them for free! And then they even sold off what was left.
