A vw Iltis would tickle my fancy.
Possibly the Canadian Bombardier version if you can find a good body.
Both use a ton of vw and Audi parts.
The German version used a vw diesel while the Canadianone used a gas engine.
Came awfully close to buying one.
Its lighter duty than a 151 but relatively good on the road.
Just some more thoughs.

A surplus defender/series Land Rover would be a good choice, IMHO. How about one of the Mercedes G-Wagens hitting the surplus market? http://www.swissarmyvehicles.com/vehiclelist.php?cat=4 If it's something a little more on the exotic side of things there's always the Volvo C303 http://www.webeautos.com/detail-1975-vo ... 33515.html TGB 1111 or Sugga. http://www.real4x4.com/sugga.html Or a Steyr Puch pinzgauer (test drove one of the M712 6X6s-very nice trucks). Steyr also made a G-wagen. There's also the GAZ69 https://bringatrailer.com/2016/10/02/so ... -in-miami/ Out of the above vehicles, I think the L/R would be the cheapest to buy and easiest to support (find parts for) With the G-Wagen comming in second.

Not really exotic, but would fit the "bill" for cool factor would be the good 'ol US built Dodge M37 or Jeep M715....

Hambone: Thanks for posting that craigslist add for the Volvo L3304. If I had the money that puppy would be sitting in my drive......

Lindsay
In case I forgot to mention it earlier when I was really looking into the importation of a D110 from the UK, I contacted PA Blanchard https://secure.pablanchard.co.uk/forsale.asp as they came recommended by the folks over on HMVF. They have experience with exporting to the USA and were good guys to deal with.

I was going to mention the Sugga, they are so ugly they are extremely cool. They are a common car built on a truck chassis if I remember correctly. Our member George from Holland is an expert on the Sugga and has a very nice example.

Fil, I agree on the VW Iltis, thought it was a cool little vehicle, great angle of departure, nice to know that most parts are reasonably sourced. Out on the West Coat, the challenge was to find one for sale kinda locally. Only found one ad, and it was for a unit at a Santa Monica dealer that had already sold. The couple of Canadian Iltis folks found during Google searches seemed to have moved along.
