I hope you have really, REALLY deep pockets!!!!! 75 to 100 grand to buy one here so with the monetary exchange and import fees I figure it would be the same or more. The rear frames rot out on them so there is no way I would buy one sight unseen and that is going to be tough from across the pond. Then is the issue of replacing the rear frame if you do get one with a rotted frame. It has to be cut not far behind the axle and the entire rear section removed and replaced. They are available but your welding skills better be top notch.

Had a fleeting interest in owning an early lr.
Read all the mags about them .
Looked at several on the Cape and got real close to buying one.
It finally came to a screaching halt when I talked to the mechanic who was working on one of the series 2 I was interested in.
He descrbed them as primtive compared to the M38 that I was driving at the time.
The bodies held up well but the chassis rotted out. JElectrical by Lucas was already a problem.

If you are looking for a new project then go for it as a learning exercise not as a money maker.
Just some words from an old man!!

The Australian Army has been selling off its Land Rover fleet. They are locally known as Perenties after the Project Perentie that originally set the requirements for the vehicle. They have been modified from standard which includes galvanised chassis which makes them pretty well rust proof.

They are several versions ranging from GS, standard version, FFR, fitted for radio, RFSV, Regional Force Surveillance Vehicle, and others through to several 6x6 variants. They sell from about AUD8,500 to AUD16,500 depending on version. Some have been sold to US residents and you can ask about their experience and find out a lot more on the site and forum hosted at AULRO.COM.

Parts are fairly readily available and they use an Isuzu diesel engine which is a plus.

Good luck in your decision.

Was bitten by the "Landrover Bug" a few years back and looked into importing one. My interest was in the Defender 110 so I didn't pay much attention to the other models out there. I've posted some links to L/R sites that may be of interest to you. At the bottom there is a link to the (US)Gov't's site for importing a non standard vehicle into the US. I've been told by folks who have done it that you'll want to hire a import broker to help with this as they know the ropes & pitfalls.

Some things you may or may not be aware of: for a motor vehicle to be eligable for importation into the USA, it must be at least 25 years old. Good news is that the XMOD D110s hitting the market in the UK and Oz all date to the late 1980s so they're eligable.

I have noticed that the XMOD trucks are generally less expensive to buy than their civilian counterparts and that the 5 door defenders tend to bring more money than the 3 door versions (passenger-vs- cargo). All the trucks I was considering were XMOD so they were diesel. That's another question for you; do you want a gas or diesel version?

When I looked into importing one I think shipping from the UK to a port near me (Mid Atlantic Region) would have been around $1800.00. I couldn't even guess what shipping from Down Under to MAR would be.

Oh something Howard forgot to mention about the Aussie Landrovers is that they came from the factory with Iszuzu diesel engines. The British (MOD)trucks had a 2.5 n/a diesel which isn't thought that well of over in the UK (so I'm told).

Thanks Matt, I am looking into a XMOD 110 of that age group. Shipping to Brunswick Ga is around 2000.
The broker thing I will look into
I am looking for something different to tool around town in. doesn't have to be fast or all that comfortable.
I will be putting my company logo on it.

While I agree with your HMMGaw assessment I would be hesitant go to a LR as an alternate.
It’s your money and your work :

Thousands of the Perenties have been sold in Australia and they are still very popular. I cannot see any reason not to buy one, particularly since they have had very useful improvements over the standard military Land Rovers. Here are a couple of links to forum posts by US owners who, I am sure, would be happy to pass on their experiences.

PS I did mention they have Isuzu engines - parts for them should be easily obtained in the US I would think.

Sorry if i sound anti LR.
Just too difficult to get excited with a project that is too far away from me.
Matbe if I were younger and richer it may have been a challenge to consider.

I didn't think you sounded anti L/R, just thought you had another vehicle type in mind. Always interested in what other people have to say about a particular subject......

So you did   After you posted this I went back & reread your original post. The only down side to the perenties is that they are all the way down in OZ & we're up here in the USA. Shipping on something like that might be prohibitively expensive. All things being equal, I do believe that the Aussie built Defender 110 is the superior machine when compared to it's UK counter-part (With respect to our British friends :) ).....

Read too many of your posts Fil to think that. To each his own - I had a Series 2 FFT ex army and now have a MUTT as that is my current interest. Doesn’t make me anti LR, just pro MUTT :)
