Bummer of an afternoon

Unread post by old dodge guy » April 27th, 2018, 11:07 pm

Well guys, hope all your afternoon activities went better than mine. I had a real bummer of an afternoon. Other than a sore foot, I am OK, but the rest of the afternoon sucked. :(

Pictures show everything! A burnt dozer. Yea that sucks. I fire like that on a diesel is usually from fuel spraying from an injection line. Generally the only way you are going to get a fire that hot with little else to burn. Did the fire die down to an electrical fire once the engine shut down? Looks like pretty new tracks, was it worked on over the winter?

Wow, that got hot, were you caught in the middle of the field with no way to extinguish it?, looks like it burnt a while, hope it was insured. I've seen many skidders burn but not many dozers.

I'll be looking at it later today. Answers to some questions. Yes it was in the middle of the field, the extinguisher was on the bench from when we worked on it this winter. Last fall Dad blew a torque converter seal, so we had it in the shop and fixed it. Completely serviced and taken to the field this week, no other leaks at that time, worked day before, all afternoon, no problems. Just spent $200 just in oil servicing it and filled fuel tank, about 80 gallons of diesel.
As to cause, it definitely was hydraulic, just not sure what yet. Belly pans washed last fall after torque converter leak, got to get rid of the leaked oil ya know.
Fire only went out because fire dept used foam, burned diesel lines off tank and diesel was running a full stream from tank. Tank did not burn, but fuel was boiling when they arrived.
I tried to get to fuel shut off, but just too hot!!!!
I just had time to shut down engine and get out, see picture of cab.
Kinda sore today, had to run 3-400 yards just to get phone reception to call 911, then go about 1/4 mile to house. I am too out of shape to do that without pain the next day......today.
Getting old sucks.
Still crazy after all these years.

Hydraulic oil does not generally burn like that without something else, like fuel, getting it going. The flash point on hydraulic is very low. That is why I suggested a diesel line leak. I have seen many fires like that on construction equipment where it was started by a cracked injector line spraying on the hot exhaust. Vaporized fuel will ignite in a heartbeat and then it is like a torch coming out of the cracked line and that will burn off hydraulic lines quickly. Tow it back to the shop, pressure wash it and get some paint on the metal and start the search. But be sure to check the injection lines.

I can see the pictures now. Damn, that does suck and is going to take a lot of time to get it running again.
