I have located an M151A2 possibly unmolested, original from front bumper to back bumper, it may still have original tires on it, with about 9,000 original miles. This vehicle has been used as a farm vehicle since received so it will need some TLC, it runs and drives ok. My question is: is this just a fancy yard planter or museum piece? I have an opportunity to purchase it, however I am very leary of purchasing something only to add to my yard art, can it be licensed for highway use?
Re: 02H60372-xxxx 2320-01-264-4819
Well, hard to say. You posted the number for an A1 but without pictures we really can't tell you what you actually have and whether it is worth keeping or not. Museum piece is a pretty high standard and if it was a farm vehicle I would say that to be a museum piece it is going to need some work. That said museum piece can cover a wide range of conditions, I have seen museum vehicles that looked good from a distance but were nothing more than a gutted shell in reality. Have you looked good at the underneath of it to see that the bottom is not all rotted out? The unibody rails rot out on these quite often and farm use would mean it probably did not get much in the way of cleaning.

Good questions and thank you for your reply. I have not looked at frame or even under the hood, however I do know it was not on salted roads or kept out in the weather since it left military service. I do have pics of data plate, however I have to figure out how to post them.

And there is a lot of ground between museum piece and yard planter. Not all of us take our trucks all the way down and restore them completely. Mine is a truck that saw a lot of ranch use, is largely original (though a bit dog-eared) and I enjoy the heck out of mine!
Best of luck to you with this!

TJ

Here is best pic of the bunch...
Looks like ROPS was added by cover plate. Don't see an inspection stamp or date stamp. Maybe aftermarket plate or just bad picture? He also included a pic of the heater data plate so it has heat.

Thank you for the information, I think I will keep all this in mind and pass on trying to purchase it for now. It isn't going anywhere.
Re: 02H60372-xxxx 2320-01-264-4819
The plate is genuine. it's a pre-emissions AMG-built M151A2 from some period in 1972. That doesn't mean this plate is the original to THIS vehicle.
Dataplates were swapped around for various nefarious reasons !
I'd be more interested in what the body-tag says..... if the tag co-incides with the dataplate information then the plate could well be correct for the vehicle.
Do you know where to look for the tag? If you don't, e-mail me as below.

The A2 did not have an inspectors stamp.Surveyor wrote:Here is best pic of the bunch...

Body tag locations. Do not worry to much about the spare tire location, I don't put much faith in that one. Ken may have a different opinion.

Re: 02H60372-xxxx 2320-01-264-4819
The originator of this post (David) has sent me a batch of photos of this vehicle. He feels that there is more work involved in a restoration than he originally anticipated so the vehicle may be for sale.
For continuity purposes, I've posted this update.....but the photos of this A2 are now in the "For Sale" section of the Board.
You can find them under.... "David's M151A2 02H 60372"

I looked at the pictures and although the body is a bit rough the underneath is exceptionally solid. That would be a very good base for a restoration.

Rick, really? I did see a lot of things I would not want to see, there is still a lot of work ahead for the buyer.
