Use of stainless steel bolts

Unread post by rickf » September 23rd, 2018, 2:45 pm

From the factory and on replacement kits they use stainless bolts on M-151 exhaust manifolds. These have a reputation of breaking. In the past people thought it was due to corrosion or dissimilar metals. I had written an article a long while back when I found the problem was that the soft stainless bolts were galling the threads and therefor would not come out no matter what kind of penetrant you used on them. I always recommended replacing those bolts with regular grade 5 steel bolts. Well, some listened and more flamed me. Made no difference to me since I get paid buy the hour. Here is a really good video that is much better at showing and describing the stainless problem. Keep this in mind when you want to replace any hardware with stainless just to keep it from rusting.
