Turn signals on a 62?

Unread post by Refit1701 » September 30th, 2018, 6:04 pm

My truck has the Sparton lever on the column and a distribution box under the dash. Was this a military added item? I'm guessing it uses the marker lights up front for the lights?

The military did add turn signals to some of the early 151's that were still in service after the A1's came in but they would have added the lights on top of the fenders since they still needed the blackout lights in the grill. Those were not marker lights. The early turn signals had a breadbox looking control unit with a hundred wires in it (not quite but looked like it  ) on the floor above your left foot.

Yes, it was part of an upgrade kit which added turn signals.
No, it didn't utilize the marker lights.....the kit recommended the use of the orange-lensed light units which were bolted to the front fenders. These lights have the same body as the markers but have orange lenses fitted. Later, the turn lights were added at the factory. If you want to add the fender turn lights, Cameron Manufacturing on this board can supply you with the turn-signal light bases (these are raised metal bases which support the light units correctly).

It's odd that it has the box under the dash but no sign of lights on the fenders. I'll look under the fenders again. I may just delete the harness, etc.

It may have been added by a previous owner who converted the blackouts to markers, that was very common on all of the military Jeeps. You could also eliminate that breadbox control and go with a more modern electronic one with the later harness. Or you can even get the correct ends and convert the wires that are already there to the new box, there will be a lot of wires eliminated.

When I pull the harness out for sandblasting, I'll see what was actually done.
