1970 M151A2 Budd/Ford MUTT

Unread post by oldrangermutt » October 24th, 2018, 8:42 pm

I'd like to add some information that I have learned since purchasing my 1970 M151A2 Budd/Ford MUTT. A better understanding of the numerous contract numbers can be found in David Doyle's book "M151 MUTT In Action", published by Squadron Signal Press. According to Doyle, after Ford received the contract in 1950, they spent the next nine years building prototypes. The first M151 was delivered in 1959. Turned out they hadn't built the unibody structure well enough and after the body failed after mounting a .50 cal, this design was sent back for improvement. In 1963, the M151 reappeared as the A1. Willy's Motors had the contract with Ford to build the A1's. Jumping ahead to 1969, Willy's-Kaiser/Jeep was now the subcontractor for Ford. In February 1970, the last Ford MUTT was delivered to the military, this contract was with Budd (Railcar Co.). Willy's-Kaiser was purchased by AM General in 1970. AM General continued to build the M151A2 into the late 1990's. M151A2's built by Budd lasted a short span - Feb. 1970 to late 1971. The MUTT that I own was delivered in Dec. 1970 or Jan. 1971 and has the sheetmetal plate just under the hood line with the contract and serial number

This might be a little more accurate information. The M-151 was never designed to mount a 50 cal. it just happened that the M2 would mount on the M4 pedestal. The M60 was the main gun that was designated for the M-151.
