So, who is hoarding all the jeep tires ?

Unread post by acudanut » October 27th, 2018, 10:25 am

I have seen Barns and warehouses filled top to bottom with new (old) jeep tires, but never see any for sale on here. I remember when they were 50.00 each. :?:

Old jeep tires are a thing of the past!
They are hard, cracked and have little life left in them.
While you are going to spend a lot more money you are going to get a much better life and performance.
If correctness is not important to you then look at a set of
LT 215-85 R16 winter tires.
Been riding a set for 15 years on three separate jeeps.

Old original tire are not safe to use other that on a trailer queen used for shows. They are all dry rotted and as Fil said, hard as a rock. The compound is so hard that traction is like steel on pavement or ice on ice. You still see people selling them "with plenty of tread left" but they will stand up on their own with no air in them they are so hard and that is no exaggeration.

I see your points. I never go over 40 mph very often. As long as the tires were always stored inside and new, I will use them. I insist on correct military tires. (looks better) imo

Your life is more important.
Go buy a set of current production NDCC tires.
Going to cist you some extra money but in the long run you will be ahead.

Being stored inside isn't a qualifier for an old stock tire being kept well. Take the advice. With tires, no amount of skill or finesse is going to prevent problems when they occur. Spending a few more bucks on new tires is money well spent...and the life you save might not necessarily be your own.

Jeep trailers are another story altogether but large trailers also need good tires.

I was a cop for 30 years and handled many accidents, often caused by someone thinking they were being clever by saving a nickel or two. Some of those equipment-related accidents were entirely preventable. Some cost people their lives.

I have the same type of tire as Fil has on my A2, quieter, softer ride.I have NDT tires from the early 70's(tire marked as such) which I think might be on the151, which is only driven 20--30 MPH.The tire man told me don't drive high speed with them.Think I'll do some tire swapping

I also have the opinion that "jeep tires" are perfectly ok for knocking around in town when the weather is good and the speeds are kept low. But the street isn't the intended home for NDCs and NDCCS. Bottom line, if you decide to run "jeep tires" run good ones that are new-made and be aware of and respect their limitations.

Points well taken. I wonder how many of us have 10 to 40 year old tires on our Mutts, I know I am not alone here.

I did for one week until I realized there was zero traction and I bought new tires!
