Batteries frozen

Unread post by Mark » November 16th, 2018, 7:56 pm

When I went to start the A2(parked in the garage)it would barely turn over, backed it out of garage, set a while, then tried starting it, no go.looked to see if it needed water in batt.
the liquid was frozen. So maybe it was lacking water, that why it froze. The temps have been in the 20's.So I guess I'll remove the batteries, thaw them out, and see what happens.I guess I better see how old they are too. These are 51Rs.

If they froze then they were dead, real dead if they froze at 20 degrees. They probably will not come back and if they do they will not be dependable. Batteries are crap anymore, it is damn near impossible to find good batteries without going to the extra expense of AGM's.

There is a way to rejuvenate a battery but it involves dumping out the acid, flushing it with baking soda and a bunch of other steps. I have never tried it for the main reason of, what do you do with the old acid? It is STILL acid! You can look it up in a Google search for rejuvenating car batteries or something like that. I still remember an additive called VX-6. It did actually work. I pulled batteries out of the scrap pile that were beyond dead and added this stuff and put them on a charger and they worked for years. That stuff disappeared many years ago.

Oh from the 70's I thought they said put epsom salts in the battery cells, then charge it good and it will make it last longer, I am not sure about the word epsom salts being the right stuff. But I think the batteries were made different in those days.I'll have to see if I wrote that down anywhere, which will be a long shot.

The way to dispose of battery acid is to pour it over baking soda or lime. Either one neutralizes the acid.

Some idiot tried telling me to put a aspirin in each cell. What a joke.

Well, Aspirin is salicylic acid and in certain circumstances it will release a very small amount of sulfuric acid as it decomposes. I don't really think it will solve your dead battery headache though.
