Here's a few new photos. Pics are: gas in the bucket, drain line hooked to gas line, 2 pics of the leak area, and a pic of the new stain.
http://s253.photobucket.com/user/g0th/l ... st%20start

Grabbed the test battery, and pulled the one out of my cj5, slapped em together and turned it over, engine is free.
Tightened plugs and cables, hit it with starter fluid and turned it over.. Really old gas came pouring out of the carb, so i guess rebuilding that is on the list.
Disconnected fuel line at carb and hooked it up to a drain hose into a bucket. Smells like 20 year old 100ll, resembles nuclear cat pee.
Sprayed some more starter fluid, turned it over and... Fired right up.
Pat myself on the back, turned around, and spotted the large oil puddle forming under it.
Ran to grab an oil-dri sock and wrap it around the spill, then looked for the leak.

TLDR: It starts with starting fluid, carb dumps gas out the air cleaner, and I have an oil leak at the distributor or the oil gauge line.

Rick:
Yeah, the 109 is going to become my rv when I get around to it. Still trying to hunt down the oil leak, at this point it's either the compressor or a line near the compressor.
I also have the m105a2 to go with it, unsure what I am going to do with it, but picked it up without planning that far ahead.

TJ:
That's why I have the oak tree and street view blurred out :P

I replaced the oil line to pressure gauge, no more leak.

Looks like the oil pressure gauge hose is leaking, did you get the tranny freed up or was the clutch free?, those carbs are tricky to fine tune, so you may want to send it to Ricky.

Those carbs have a vacuum operated accelerator pump so whenever you shut it off it will shoot a load of gas into the throat of the carb. This is for a good reason, with no mechanical accelerator pump you can pump the gas all day before starting and you still will not get any gas to start it. The extra shot at shut down gives it that little bit needed for the next start as long as it within the time before it evaporates. You will find that with the M151 you always need the choke to start unless it was just running. So now you know it runs I am guessing it has moved up the ladder on the to do list?

Nobody has commented on the rear suspension yet? Nobody see anything strange there?

hambone:
Clutch and brake cylinders are stuck, haven't tried beating on the linkage with a deadblow yet :P And yep, changed the hose, no more leak, will change the oil tomorrow if i find time (going on an hour of sleep, so headed to bed soon). I will say this, with the driveshaft connected I can't move the vehicle, with it dc'd it moves fine. When I started the engine, the driveshaft didn't move. So at this point It's probably time to remove the starter and start looking at how buggered up the transmission is.

Rick:
That's all well and good, but it was literally just pouring gas (I use the term loosely) out of the air filter, acts like the float valve is stuck or not sealing properly. As far as it moving up the ladder... For now it's still pretty much the same. Change the oil and filter, then take a look at the transmission in between everything else. Today was a bust working on the r1100gs, so decided to knock a couple things out on the rail and see where it stands. I still have 3 vehicles that take precedence over this one, my jeep zj is leaking transmission fluid from somewhere that isn't the pan gasket, the r1100gs was badly maintained so needs to be partially disassembled and gone through, and the goldwing i picked up last month needs a bit of cosmetic work as it was laid down. As far as rear suspension, first mutt, so *shrugs* :P

Me? The only Cherokee I have is an 89 and it is shot but it has a 4.o 6. I have a CJ-7 with a worked 401 V8 and had another with a 454 Chevy in it.

Rick:
Funny, the one I picked up is a 1992 1500 se :) As far as the carbs go, I already like it more than my 82 aspencade (2 vs 4 carbs). I was going to convert the 1100 to a single carb, but then decided to just pick up a slightly newer one for the dual carbs and reverse.

Husker:
It has the I6 in it, but it was a coastal jeep and was beat to hell when I got it. PO lifted it 4-6", cut the fenders, installed 33" tires, and decided not to update the speedo gear or change the axle gearing. So far I have replaced the front hubs, front axle shafts (old ones were shot), changed the speedo gear, replaced the entire rear hub and brake assemblies (old ones were trash, parking brake assemblies were solid rust blocks, disc assemblies weren't much better), fixed a bit of wiring, misc other stuff.. daily driver work in progress.

Rick & Husker:
When I was living in the terlingua I had an 84 xj sport that I cut the rear roof/windows off of, removed the hatch, doors, etc, and stiffened up with some welded in tube. That thing was great until I left it sitting for a year while I was back in san antonio, went back to pick it up and the local pack/kangaroo rats had chewed all the wiring and filled my air cleaner with seeds. Now I have the zj and a 67 cj5 project with the dauntless v6 in it.

Oh yeah, just in case anyone thinks I was joking... I am seriously considering working up low speed 4-wheel steering on this thing after it is up and moving. Unsure if I will go the connected linkage to front route, or just use a heavy duty 24vdc linear actuator.

Wow, he may not need me at all, guys. Anyone who has oil socks on hand is working way above my pay grade. All I have is old bath towels, kitty litter and a couple of second-hand Blitz pans.

But seriously, remember that head gasket that was laying on the front seat? Ummmmm... what's it for?.... (he teased, in a sing-song voice) I ask, only because someone is racing ahead again! If it were me, before I would begin changing fluids, I would want to know if there is an unresolved head gasket issue lurking in that engine. Maybe a little automotive detective work is in order.

Yes, likely as not the former owner's troubles with this vehicle stem from a transmission issue but that doesn't necessarily mean there weren't other issues as well.

Cheers,
TJ
