Starter does not need to come off. There are about 8-10 bolts around the shifter in a roughly rectangular pattern. Take them out and the cover lifts straight up. No need to remove anything other than those bolts.

Are we talking about the same part? I can only see 4 bolts on it and the used one i looked at on ebay seems to have 6 (my other two are under the starter).

Hat plate has 6 bolts in it, pull the starter, I think Rick was thinking of the transmission cover on the jeep.

Sounds like a plan.
Right now I need to get up on the roof and make sure everything is in place if we get rain, then check the sump hose and make sure i didn't catch it in the gate earlier. Will get back to work on this tomorrow if it is dry, grabbed the small compressor to blow all the gunk off, as I want to wait until after i do the mmo/starter/install plugs and try to start it test. No sense in pressure washing it when i have a plug wire loose and pb sitting in the plug wells.

quick update:
blew off most of the bs, sprayed cleaner around spark plugs then blew them out as well, managed to get the plugs off and put 1oz of mmo in each cylinder, cut chain on batteries and removed them, cut last seat bolt and removed seat.

will probably let it sit until sunday or monday before i mess with it again. if it is dry on sunday, will be working on one of the bikes all day to try and get it ready for spring.

My bad! I have no idea why I was thinking the top came off with the starter in. I was way off on the bolt count too. Thats what happens when you work on too many different vehicles. I am going to have to go back through my pics, I am sure I pulled a trans cover without pulling the starter but what it might have been is since the starter is only 2 bolts and they are quick and easy I may not have even registered it. The wire is not hot so in normal use I would not even disconnect the wire, just set the starter off to the side.

rick:
Not a problem at all, the only reason I can fake what I am doing on this one is none of the components are hidden. :)

Right now I have 3 current projects (4 if you count this one) and 11 or so others that I will get to when I have time to spare. Losing track of what's what on which vehicle is pretty common over here :)

Make that 12 other projects :P

Just got a call from a friend that got run off road, broke the exhaust between the cat and the muffler on the passenger side and wanted to see if I could weld it up. Luckily it's next week and I should actually be awake when he drops by. In other news, battery labels from the removed batteries are shot, measured them, and hopefully group 26/r should fit ok.

I wouldn't go buying new batteries just yet! Just scrounge up a couple that might hold a little charge and jump them at the needed time. One vehicle on one and another vehicle on the other.

Not planning on it.. Just trying to plan things out for future use, battery rails were welded in for a certain size. Ended up scrapping the gt60 battery idea, forgot it had screw terminals (lawn tractor)... Ended up grabbing the one from the rail that looked in the best condition, laid some rebar on it to jump P-P and N-N with the test battery i had in the garage... Managed to get the voltage up enough for the battery minder to recognize it and start desulphating and charging. Still shows as a weak battery, but, I figure I have loads of time, so worth trying to utilize it if possible.

very worst case scenario, will start up the m109a3 and use just jumper over to this one to test. Batteries on it were replaced a year or so ago and have been sitting on a noco dual 12v charger since.

You have a 109A3? Ok, On top of the sand buggy strange vehicle, and you apparently have other stuff laying all over the place you have my favorite vehicle that I never managed to get. Now I have got to get the Texas and meet both of you! You do realize TJ has the same basic vehicle? Are you sure you guys aren't related? You don't have a halftrack do you?
