DMV Fees

Unread post by m75 » February 2nd, 2019, 2:42 pm

Well, another year, another DMV renewal for the M151.

This time, with the 2018 "voter-approved" (read: blue sheep with no brains at all......) increase in registration fees across the board, my renewed California tags for 2019 came in at $127.00. For one year. One year. One. Year. I won't put $127.00 in gas into the tank in that year.

Oh, and the same Senate bill for the increased fees also maintained the recent increase in gasoline taxes as well. That's on top of California having either #1 or #2 spot in 50-state fuel costs.

Why do I stay here? Apparently not for the therapy.......

I was curious about DMV fees. Here in NJ antique vehicle tags are free after the first time but all my other vehicles have gotten crazy. 45.00 for each trailer, 40.00 for each car and my pick up truck is 170.00 since it has dual wheels and they consider it commercial no matter that the tags are NOT commercial. And you don't have to tell me about gas, NJ added 24 cents to the gas tax last year!! Oh, It is all going to fix the roads they say. Yea right, not where I am living that is for sure. But then again, NJ is always trying to beat out California in everything. Property taxes, Emissions laws, gun laws. You name it.

What do those charges cover? Just the right to use the vehicle on the road or that plus some insurance against injury?

Just the license plates to drive. Insurance is completely separate and very, VERY expensive in NJ!

You can get an antique tag in Arkansas for a one time fee of $7, but are only allowed one, regular vehicle registration is $23. Future road use of the MV's is not looking good across the country. :(

interesting. I pay AUD327 for my Hyundai Elentra registration and another AUD320 for compulsory personal injury insurance. On top of that it costs AUD 650 to insure the car so my annual cost is about AUD1300 and more for my Defender. The MUTT is on historical registration with very limited usage and it totals about AUD450 per annum. Not sure how that all compares but at first glance it looks as if you are on a good deal?

I pay $1600.00 a year on my 2006 Mustang GT and $1400.00 a year on my wifes 2016 Toyota Corolla. That is for full coverage insurance. I only have basic liability on my truck due to its age and value and that costs me $650.00 a year. Now, consider that is in NJ which has the highest insurance rates in the country. There are other states where $1600.00 would cover my entire fleet at full coverage!
