Frame rail holes?
Didn't I read that the military punched holes in the frame rails on the M151 as a corrosion prevention?
Re: Frame rail holes?
hey look to be replacements from the underbody repair kit. Don't I see the weld holes along the flange? And the flange is raised away from the floor in several spots, you don't see that with the original rails.

Re: Frame rail holes?
These are the original rails, doesn't have an underbody kit, I thought I read that the military put out a work order for this mod.? I may be wrong.
Re: Frame rail holes?
I have read some corrosion control document about drilling holes and filling the rails with a corrosion prevention compound
Corrosion control is still a big thing in the army

Re: Frame rail holes?
Does it have all the other spots drilled and plugged where it would have been rustproofed? The most obvious are under the hood on the firewall/cowl and inside on the rear floor.

Yes, it has all the obvious holes, this is the first one I have seen with the corrosion mod.rickf wrote:Does it have all the other spots drilled and plugged where it would have been rustproofed? The most obvious are under the hood on the firewall/cowl and inside on the rear floor.

Re: Frame rail holes?
A friend of mine got a bunch of these, most crushed (see the one I always post as crushed mutt), but a couple in real good shape. They were all undercoated but what I found out was that the Ziebart undercoating got hard over time and water could get behind it and that made it even worse than no undercoating at all. That is why I do NOT undercoat anything. I always use quality paint and primer and that way you can see right away when there is rust forming. With undercoat you don't see it until a huge piece of undercoating falls off, usually with the rotted metal attached. Eastwood makes a system for restoring the inside of frame rails. I do not know how good this is. You would need to get all of the loose rust out of there somehow first. I would use a hole saw and punch a few 2" holes to get access and then weld the punched out piece back when cleaned out and then do the interior resto.

Re: Frame rail holes?
I'm going to look inside with an inspection scope, jeep was in dry storage on an AFB until it was scrapped in 1999, then it was hauled to a garage where it sat for another 18 yrs., gentleman I got it from said it had never been driven in civilian hands, only has a little surface rust. Another question, is that CARC paint? it not well bonded and comes off in big flakes.
Re: Frame rail holes?
Carc paint on modern vehicles does the same thing one of our LMTVs basicly was shedding

Re: Frame rail holes?
My first A2 in 94 had its rail coated by a company named Dacar Corp.
The drain holes in the frames were widened to allow for the spray wand to be inserted.
Have the original rustproofing TM outlining the whole procedure for various vehicles.
In addition I made a simple hose adaptor to allow me to insert in to the rails and wash them out.
You would be surprised how much Mud came out everytike that was done.

Re: Frame rail holes?
You are correct Fil, the holes in the frame are wider than the ones in the body, after inspection, I may be washing them out and applying internal rail coating as Rick mentioned.Fil Bonica wrote:My first A2 in 94 had its rail coated by a company named Dacar Corp.
