USS Hornet (CV-8 ) Found
Guys
I posted this over on steel soldiers & would have posted it over on g503 but couldn't figure out where now that they've done away with their general discussion forum. Thought some on here might find this interesting.
Wreck of the Aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8 ) has been found. She is sitting off the coast of the Solomon Islands in about 17000 feet of water.

Absolutely amazing how well preserved all of that is. And it appears to be sitting upright and in one piece, rare for something that sank to that depth.

The USS Yorktown was in better shape and is around that depth (Yorktown still had it's haze gray paint job!) All the same, it's a pretty amazing find.

The International Harvester pic is pretty amazing to me.

Same here. the fact that it is sitting on it's wheels & still inside the ship, so close to that large bay door makes me wonder if the Hornet sank on an even keel?Surveyor wrote:The International Harvester pic is pretty amazing to me.
Something to also consider is that as we look at the photos of that ship, keep in mind that it is also the tomb for 111 Saliors.

Re: USS Hornet (CV-8 ) Found
Yeah The Hornet does seem to be in good shape for her age & depth. Most of the carrier wrecks I've seen (images of) they are usually sitting upright or laying over to one side. It's the battleships (& heavy cruisers) that seem to "turn turtle" when they sink. Owning mostly to all the weight up top (armor, gun turrets, etc.)rickf wrote:Absolutely amazing how well preserved all of that is.
