Where the latest MUTTs were produced

Unread post by Andrew » August 4th, 2020, 10:16 am

Hello everybody,

as I was searching for details where (not only) my MUTT has been made, I sent an e mail with request to AM General company.
For those of you, who are interested in production sites as well, the answer from AM General follows below:

Congratulations on acquiring a M151A2. My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I can provide some basic information about your
vehicle. You said it was built in 1977. I’m sure you already know that the M151 was at one time also built by Kaiser and Ford, but by 1977 they
were being built by AM General almost exclusively. Your M151A2 was built in the Chippewa plant on the South side of South Bend, Indiana. The
building formerly belonged to Studebaker, which was a car maker home based in South Bend, Indiana until 1963. The same plant produced many
military trucks during WWII and beginning in 1944 the plant built airplane engines for the B17 bomber. When the plant stopped producing the
M151A2 AM General used the same production line to produce a newly designed mail truck. This program lasted for several years. As the
M151A2 was being phased out in the early to mid-80’s AM General was awarded a contract to build the Humvee. I am attaching a link that has
some very detailed information about the M151A2. I hope you find it helpful and entertaining. Thank you for contacting us.

By the way, this production plant is still visible on google maps.

So, that's all,
Always MUTT !!
