Pls advice A2 marking

Unread post by Andrew » November 23rd, 2020, 2:09 pm

Hello everybody,

after some tunning of my A2 ( rear diff. change, shock absorbers, new rear tyres, etc..) I would like to make next step - car marking.

My intention is M 151 A2 serving in West Germany, close to (former) Czechoslovakian border, in 1977 - 85 year.
I don´t know which divisions were located there ( 1. or 2. infantry, or some paratroopers??)
I don´t know how exactly the division's, battalion, regiment's numbers were lined up on vehicle.
I will mark hood, bumpers front and rear.

I will be happy for any advice.

Regards,

Andrew

"The 2nd ACR served along the East German and Czechoslovakian geopolitical borders for the remainder of the Cold War, until 1992. Throughout this period"

I was with the 2nd Armored Cavalry from 1961 to 1964 we did the border patrol along the Czech line around Hof Germany, our base was in Bindlach just north of Bayreuth, if you do face book check out the 2nd Armored Cavalry page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2dACR

here's another link with some good reading. https://history.army.mil/documents/BorderOps/ch5.htm

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't they stop marking the outsides of the vehicles except for subdued bumper markings in the mid 70's?

You are correct, no markings with cammo or flat black if any were needed.

Dan, Mark, thank you for your comment and advice. I see that 2nd ACR still exists, located in Vilseck, Germany.
Based on your comment, it doesn't make sence to put marking on A2? I will not apply camo, just whole green oliv color.

Go to the top of this page and look for the G838 manuals link, go there and scroll down to VEHICLE PAINT & MARKINGS, CAMOFLAGE. You will find several manuals there that will give you a lot of the information you are looking for.

Andrew, here are some photos of 151's in Germany in the 70's most have the Digital paint, if you enlarge the photos you can see flat black bumper markings on most of them, the all OD ones also have flat black.

Dan,

on that picture with the whole motorpool, that first jeep in the front corner really pulls a trailer behind a trailer?

A2 marking - hood nubmer

Unread post by Andrew » December 17th, 2020, 1:59 pm

After search about marking details I still have one open issue.
What is hood number ( for example 2B8722) ?

P.S. Rick you are right, since middle of 70. hood number
was not applied because of camo.

Is there an official mount for doing tandem trailers like that or was this custom job?
