Mr. Recovery,

What are you going to use? Glass or walnut media. We use both where I work and the walnut does a good job on removing paint but won't touch corrosion. I've been using both on my restore and like Rick says make sure you clean your parts real good.

The best thing to do is wash the parts before you blast them. This is to remove all the loose paint, grease, or crude. By doing this you will significantly reduce the chance of clogging the hose or gun. When the blasting is complete, you have to clean the parts real good to remove all the residual particles from the part. I wash my parts in a solvent tank from safety-kleen. I also use an air gun to blow dry after washing. If you don't clean your parts after blasting, especially engine parts, you will most likely screw your engine due to blockages in the oil passages.

Good looking blaster Mr. R how much air do you have to push to make it work good?

Hi and thanks for the replies, yes indeed Rick(f) and Tim(m-11) washing the parts is by far the most important thing that needs to be done, I have two parts cleaners, one for dirty parts and the other is for after blasting parts only and has a double filter, I also run a tap in all bolt holes to clean out the dust that will pack in the threads, I think this is good to do even if the parts are not cleaned by blasting. I like to use glass and plastic beads, glass on hard metal parts such as heads, engine blocks, ect.ect., I use the plastic on sheet metal and aluminum parts.

Toptiger, I think cleaning the parts befor blasting is up to the person doing the job, if it has packed on oil and dirt then yes by all means it should be precleaned, if I'm doing something like wheels or a bumper or seat frame I'll just wash it with a water hose and dry it first. After blasting all parts must be cleaned with air then flushed with clean solvent then air again.

Floyd, The manual recommends a 5 HP 2 stage compressor able to put out 7-20 cfm @ 80 psi, I have a 6.5 HP 60 gal Husky upright that puts out 10.4 cfm at 90 psi, it keeps up real good but I think if I was going to use the blast cabinet more then 2hrs at a time and every day I would need to upgrade to one with a faster recovery rate.

Mr.R

Looks like your garage is pretty crowded. I would get rid of some of those unimportant items like the air compressor and sand blaster and tool cabinet so you could make room for a refrigerator full of beer.

Haven't found it yet, but haven't been to a good specialty liquor store in St. Louis area yet. All my trips to the area are to fill my pickup with fixtures for the house in the country that my wife and I are renovating.
