Re: Marine vs Army m151's
Rck , not so.
I have a 79 contract Marine Corps A2 and it came with the regular MC hubs not Army tie downs
Mark, I solved the issue of rust behind the tie down on the rear by coating the entire surface with black silicone
RTV.
Saw it somewhere back in 1995 when I did my first Resto and figured that I would try it.

Oh man, we are opening a can of worms here. This is what I know and served with and schooled by. USMC Jeeps all had fording equipment and Yes we had hubs with the loop installed. I was told and I will swear on my Mothers grave, that they were meant to be used as a winch. You place a lug nut remover in the loop and use a rope or cable with this to pull yourself out of a "stuck" situation.
I did not make this up...However Marine Jeeps were "borrowed" at times from the Army. LOL

Re: Marine vs Army m151's
That is the erroneous conclusion that many people come up with when they glance at that. I can see how that theory got passed around among the troops. But, if you consider that it only threads into the hub and is only held in place with a jam nut the theory really doesn't work.
Re: Marine vs Army m151's
There are pictures of M151A1 vehicles that show the Army-style wheel eyes fitted, usually from hand-me-downs from the Army to the Corps.
However, AMG-built A2s were fitted with the square hub cores at the manufacture stage. There's a record of a warning sent to Army units that a batch of Army-bound new A2s were wrongly fitted with the USMC cores and the warning told Army mechs to do "whatever was necessary" to remove the square cores and replace with Army tiedown eyes.

Re: Marine vs Army m151's
That would work on the drivers side only since it would tighten the hub but since they are open differentials you would have to loop the rope back to the hub on the opposite side and that one is going to unscrew once you put enough pressure on it. NOW, The military did have hubs that bolted to the lugs that were designed to accommodate a rope for exactly that purpose. I have seen them in use on civilian vehicles but never saw them in the military nor have I ever seen any come up in surplus.acudanut wrote:Oh man, we are opening a can of worms here. No problem at all, I like it when some of these old threads are brought back to life. Two of the people in that thread have passed on and quite a few of the others have just moved on so it brings back memories.DevilDog7090 wrote:Sorry, my fault. I am always late to the party. Me too. In fact, the one I had Saturday afternoon around 3 pm central tasted awful good. It tasted like victory.

Re: Marine vs Army m151's
The US Army's Land Warfare Laboratory tested out the wheel adapters with ground anchors and in June 1974 recommended their further testing by a military advisory group in Thailand. At that point, the wheel adapters dropped off the military's radar.
However, those ingenious Canadians actually produced similar if not identical kits for use on their M151A2 CDN vehicles.
First picture shows the US Army's test kit. Second picture shows the Canadian version installed.

No thank you! That's a hot mess. I'll pass.
Re: Marine vs Army m151's
I have seen that setup in action in Mexico in the desert sand but used on the front wheels so they could be steered towards the anchor to keep the rope on the drums. It worked very well. The guys using it didn't take the drums off either, it was in the middle of the desert so nothing to catch them on.
