Couple Sneak Peeks - Homerguy's Mutt becomes MrDibbles Mutt

Postby mrdibbles on January 20th, 2010, 8:55 pm

Hey Guys-
Just a couple quick pics. I am waiting to pull the power pack until after this weekend. A friend of mine and I, along with our families, are taking our Mutts to a friend's ranch here in Austin. Actually it's more like a friend of a friend's ranch but you know how that goes. Nine thousand acres within 20 minutes of my house 8) Anyway I've been fiddling with the Mutt for a couple weeks. New tires, new wheels, new shocks, new seat belts, new transmission (not installed), a lot of little detail stuff, but still a long ways to go. I love where I am right now though... lots to do and no rush. Still thinking seriously about a rolling restoration. Pull the power pack and detail... that kind of thing. Anyway here's a few pictures:

She's looking good Matt! I see you got back into the yellow headlights! Thanks for the picks.

By the way how do you mount seat belts without ROPS? I would like to take mine off this summer but don't like the thought of being on the road without belts and part of the system is mounted to the ROPS. Post a photo of the mount if possible or shoot me one.

Hey Sherwan you need to have your eyes checked    Not only is this not the nicest tan Mutt out there (thanks for the compliment though) but that isn't a carpeted garage either. That's an epoxy floor... perhaps to some made to look like carpet :) This Mutt will never be as nice as Diamondjim's tan A2. His sits on a pedestal of greatness. Mine will be a driver that I constantly fiddle with an upgrade. I say that now but who knows.,.. I may media blast it next month.

Why would you want to media blast it ? It looks just fine or do the angles of the pictures hide the 'bad' areas ?

Where are you getting those dark, yellow headlights. I have some light colored lights that look more tinted.
I like how you painted the mirror without covering the screws...nice touch from a "car guy" who has restored vehicles before.
Rolling history, while restoring your MUTT....I like it.

Hey Ralph... I got the yellow lights from Owens Export several years ago. I too like the darker color :) As for the mirror... that was a pain in the arse. I removed those screws for paint and when the last screw came out the internal mechanism became totally free and slid around on the inside of the mirror. Pretty frustrating and delicate operation getting it all back together again. Thanks for the compliments! I try to do one little thing everyday on it and since there's so many things to do that's easy enough.

Very nice Matt. My tan mutt is halfway finished. I'll post some pics soon.
I'm not picking your mutt but I have a question. Can jerry cans be painted tan? I also
want to paint mine tan but I thought I've read somewhere that they should not be painted in another colour? So I'm not sure.

I also noticed those "balancer thingies" on the spare wheel. Are they civilian add ons or military?
Two of my wheels had them too and I was livid because my mechanic did not remove them during stripping and repainting.
If they are military, I'll keep them in situ.

Jay

Jay,

The balance weights should be fitted where needed otherwise you're wheels will wobble when driving down the road.

This is true... and gas cans can be painted tan. Point rattle can towards gas can and depress the button on top 8)

Well the underside is what I'd most like to media blast. That and things like the seats, windshield, interior, etc... Pretty soon it just makes it easier. I can tell you I don't look forward to the thought of putting the Mutt up on the rack and detailing the undercarriage. That's what media blasting does in spades.
