New to the forum, got a '71 AM General.

Postby Crusader_22 on February 7th, 2010, 4:13 pm

Hi, all.

I am new here, but not new to military vehicles. I am in Tucson, AZ, and finally got a 1971 AM General A2 MUTT. It runs and drives, is demilled, but just the fenders were cut off. It could use some cleaning up of the reweld areas, but looks good as is.

It has a 1977 engine with all the emissions stuff, a repro M4 pedestal mount, and everything is intact and original. It is far from restored. I don't intend to do a restoration, I prefer the "lived in" motor pool look, and will drive it on and offroad. I do like accessories, so I am looking for all the associated stuff I can find.

I am 41, a 11 year Army NG guy, former 11B (with an Iraq tour in '05 as such doing armed convoy escort in uparmored HMMWVs), I am now an AH-64D Apache mechanic/crewchief and do that full time as a Guard Technician.

Looking forward to this great experience, the truck is honestly the coolest vehicle I have ever had, and I have had a lot!

It starts pretty hard cold right now, I need plugs and an electronic ignition upgrade from the Prestolite unit, I think.

Looking forward to learning and meeting fellow enthusiasts, and getting the bugs worked out of my truck.

Here is a pic from the day I brought it home (Tuesday). It has since been repainted and cleaned up a bit.

Jeff

Welcome home, brother.
MUTTs require a full choke to start.
Once it starts, push the choke in until it is about 1/4" from the dash
Drive this way until it warms up.

Welcome to G838

Besides the choke part, pumping the throttle does nothing when starting as the carburetor has no mechanical accelerator pump. The accelerator pump is vacuum operated and will only pump fuel in the carb once the engine is started or immediately after it is shut off. We have some nice stuff here. If you do not have any paper copies of the manuals, you can download free copies in PDF format by clicking the manuals spot on the top of the page. Nice vehicle. 8) How about pics of the sports car

welcome to the forum, even 11 Bravos are welcome, we just won't leave the keys layin around......
Just one thing to add to Ralph's post:
"Once it starts, push the choke in until it is about 1/4" from the dash"
On some of them like mine, you have to be very fast pushing the choke back in- lightening fast, otherwise it will flood immediately. Then you can finish that Pabst while it evaporates.

Thanks, guys. I really like the truck. I am having a lot of trouble with cold starts after it sits for a day. I'll start another thread on that, though.

Once I get the bugs sorted, this will be a lot of fun!

Oh, and Seabee, I am not averse to Bud either. I like all beer!
