Flying Jeep

Unread post by Flyboy740 » February 18th, 2008, 8:43 pm

Hey Hummer, I mean M151-LC

If you had this jeep I bet you would leave the competion in the dirt (not from the rotor wash) but because you could fly over the race track and get ahead. Only problem would be if you ran out of air in the tank.

Wires can get even good pilots. This is an OH58 of a friend milliseconds before he hits the wire seen in the picture. I will not post the after-the-hit picture but you can imagine how it looks.

Well guys, wire cutters might work on a thin telephone line, if you are lucky. Not on a high tension line. I will not go in details but people got killed in that one.

I have a morbid sense of curiosity. Go ahead, tell me more. Photos are good.

Wire Cutters

Unread post by Flyboy740 » February 21st, 2008, 10:25 pm

The Army did test back in the late 60s, early 70s where they took an OH-6 with and without WSPS (wire strike protection system) just to show the damage wires caused. They also used a OH-58. The wsps helicopters faired better than the helicopters without them.

I've seen first hand what WSPS can do but even then, it depends on the size of the wire, speed of the helicopter, where the wire is in relation to the WSPS and luck.

I still fly and give landing zone classes to medical personnel that ride on helicopters and fire and EMS on the ground what to look for. It's amazing that wires are so small and hard to see.

I flew power line partol right after I retired, the first time. It was weird that all my flying career I tried to avoid wires, had nitemares about running into them, then I ended up flying with feet of them.

When your lower than 500 feet and slow, it's hard to live through a crash.
