The films were made for the 200++ million Americans who were not in the service, even for those many more who were but never saw any combat, I suppose, so I do not judge them that closely...its Hollywood.
But among them all, the only one that got my attention and made the hairs on my arms stand up was Pvt Ryan. The Normandy Landing scene was exceptional and for anyone who doesn't know what is sounds like to be shot at, or what a bullet sounds like hitting something very near you, or the general confusion, shock and horror for the instant before you realize what is happening and someone really is trying to kill you, then this movie is for you.
And BTW when you shoot someone there really is a blood mist that appears.

I personally think that Dale Dye is a joke.

And the only thing I like about Apocolypse Now is the helicopters in the first hour or so.

Someone with Military experence has to advise the Hollywood types otherwise, WW2 movies would have on Viet Nam uniforms M151's in WW1 movies....... I only wish they would call me for a jeep appearance.

Dale Dye has military experiance but no matter how hard you try, there are always going to be technical faux paz even in SPR & BoB there were screw ups. Like someone else posted, most if not all "war movies" are made for people who were never in one (a war, that is).

For HollyWeird, it's all about the almighty dollar.

Some producers/directors go all-out for technical
accuracy, others do not...

Sad but true.

One interesting thing occurred recently when I was watching Avatar. The aircaft, Samson 16 flown by the babe, Trudy Chacon, had on its side the growling Tiger we had on our aircraft, exactly the same image, just not in color.

The guys in my unit started buzzing about this and no one could figure out the who how and why but there it is, clear as day.
Plus the babe looked like one of my wives.
