M151 Engine and Tranny

Unread post by nlatto » August 10th, 2011, 2:04 pm

Hey everyone, I am a new memeber here. I just came across a complete M151 engine and tranny complete with shifters all as one unit. It is used, dont know how used. Is there any value to this thing to someone? Trying to figure out if it is something that someone would need? Are they hard to come by? Is it scrap? I just dont know.
My thought is to maybe use it somehow, but I have not gotten that far yet.
I dont own an M151 either.
Just trying to educate myself on it. I am mostly a CJ7 guy, so I know nothing about the MUTT.

Thanks
Nick Latto

Well it is not scrap, it depends on whether it turns over as to whether it is worth anything. An unknown take out with transmission might get 250 - 300. If it has two belt pulley's it is an A1 and should have a vacuum pump on the lower right of the engine and if it has three belts and a fuel pump then it is an A2 engine. There will be a data plate under the exhaust manifold that will have a contract date and if rebuilt it will have a rebuild tag. Where are you located?

Its an A2, has 3 belts. There is a contract # DAAE07-71-C-0103, serial #5018180, no rebuild date. I did a little reading and since the military didnt want anyone to get the MUTTS due to their unsafe qualities they chopped them up, leaving this motor sitting in tact waiting on a project.
Motor is in Alabama, near Hoover.

You should be able to sell it, In these times though people are just not buying spares, they only buy when they need it. That contract number would make it an early A2 engine. It will fit all 151's though. I would put it for sale on this forum and the G503.com forum in the for sale pages. Unless you have the facilities to skid it and ship it you might want to advertise local pick up only. I already have four engines so needless to say I don't need another! A few things people are going to ask, does it have oil in it and what is the condition of the oil, Does it have the alternator, fuel pump, carburetor? Does it have the starter. Just figured I would throw them out there so you have the info ahead of time.

Yes it has oil in it, havnt checked condition of oil. It has the radiator, all hoses, starter, fuel pump, carb, alternator, its all there as one copmplete unit.
Ok, so now the big question. How much should I ask? I need to be reasonable, I really cant think of anyway for me to use it, so I will need to sell it.
Thanks.

That was set up to be run in place, I see the suction line to put in a gas can. It is fully complete and if you can verify that it runs then you will have no problem selling it. Just so you know it is 24 volt.

Ok, thanks for the info. My first thought was it looked liked it would run as it was.
I will change the oil and try it out.
I still need some idea of what I could expect to get for this. I want to be fair and not ridiculous.

Did you contact Vin Zike? He answered one of your posts and said he has engines and he is in south Florida.

Rick,

I have PM'd him, emailed, and answered his post. He wrote back one message, that was not clear, so I responded with some questions. That was a week or so ago.

I have seven engines on the floor right now, being worked/rebuilt. Two are almost completely rebuilt. One is configured for an A1. One for an A2. I'm not sure what he wants. He said his mutt had a diesel engine in it and wanted to put it back. I asked if the motor mounts were still correct for an L141, if he needed it to be A1 or A2, alternator or generator, tanny and clutch...... all have not been answered. I'm not sure if he is just not in the loop, or if there is a language issue.

By the end of the month I should have 4 or 5 engines complete and tested on my engine stand. It really helps to have an engine builder working in the garage!
