We ran another test piece of the A1 pass side fender support today. The part has been a mind teaser with the kick up area for the blackout light. Fresh off the laser today and press brake in a day or so. Pictures to follow. I'm close to trimming out the pass toe board to verify design.

Going to try this route. I also made the flange that supports the rear fender longer.

I'll weld this up over the weekend but we now have a good A1 passenger side rear fender support. While this picture looks like the edge is off when it's fit up and at the proper angle it is correct. This one was a challenge! I'm not very impressed at all with the bead roller and will end up making a rib die for this part. It's just too much messing around and I'm not overly impressed with the results.

Prototypes and drawings are now complete for the A2 rear side panels. I'll run the numbers, confirm price and we'll run a batch of them for stock. One more off the list.

Here is the first "correct" A1 passenger side fender support. Need to make a fixture for holding the bottom flange angle and complete the prints. I also added some material to the top flange where the fender sits. We did the ribs on our bead roller but I think I'm going to make a die for the press brake. Was trying to avoid having to make tooling but I'm not a big fan of the bead roller. Would be a nice tool to have at home to use on occasion but not for what we need. One more part off the list.

M151A2 Rear Side Panels

Unread post by hondo100 » January 23rd, 2017, 9:13 am

I received a set of the A2 rear side panels last week. We got them put on Saturday. They were the final piece needed before paint. I'm glad I waited. The fit is perfect, and the rear looks soooo much better.

Many Thanks to Guy and his patience with me.

Here is the fixture that we made for the A1 rear fender support. This is a much cheaper option compared to machining and also quicker to get through the shop. Holds the angle nice and is heavy enough to act as a heat sink.

TIG welded just because:

Made the cut outs .080" bigger then the oval flanges. This lines up the bottom piece properly on the weld seam. 1/4" thick piece on the bottom allows clearance over the flange for the top piece that the gussets are welded to. All other parts are 11 ga.

Here is the first "finished" set of A1 rear fender supports. Top flange has been extended 1/2" over what mine measured. I think we made around 5 sets at this time and I still have to come up with a price. This set is on it's way to Michigan!

So after going back and forth with our tooling supplier on rib options I've come to the decision that I'm going to split the difference between 151 / A1 stiffener rib and the A2 stiffener rib. We have a press brake die that I can make some simple modifications to that we're going to use. The hand bead roll is not the answer and I'm not willing to invest over a $1,000 for the A2 exact match. And, they were uncertain of the success. As this part is hidden I'm good with this. With all of our parts if there is any variation from the original I inform the potential buyer and based on the fact that 99% of them are accurate I don't see this as an issue.

On another note I have the tooling for the dash bead being quoted as our Machine shop is buried with work at this time. Still pushing forward!
