New from the UK

Unread post by REMESTEVE » August 23rd, 2015, 8:29 pm

Hi, my name is Steve and am from Kent in the UK. I have been collecting military vehicles from the late 80's starting off with a M38A1 then Dodge WC52, Willys MB, Dodge WC54, Ford GPW, various trailers, Land Rovers, GMC352, and a Studebaker Weasel. I currently have V8 ex RAF Land Rover and have just acquired a M151A1C which is currently under restoration. The previous owner imported the M151A1C from Portugal where it had been standing around for some time, the data plate on the dash has been bleached white!

The data plate has a delivery date of June 1969, and states that the M151A1C was made by Ford, I will post more of the details later.

When I was rubbing the paint down on the bumper I found the following unit markings - 502 - I - HH? and on the right side ???81.

steve, am i correct in thinking you are looking for information about the bumper markings? these are used to identify units and vehicles, so the ones you describe may mean 1st battalion, 502nd infantry. the HH was probably HHC, which means headquarters and headquarters company. the 81 probably had originally been marked HQ81, which would be the individual vehicle mark, and the company where it was assigned. that is how the vehicles were marked when i was in, back in vietnam. i don't think my assessment is very far off, if at all. 1/502 was a component of the 101st airborne when they were in vietnam. the 101st was generally farther north, sometimes operating in the ashau valley region. there may be some 101st guys on this site. are the hood numbers visible?

Thanks for the welcome guys, much appreciated. 199th MP thanks for the bumper confirmation good to know that my M151 was a Vietnam Veteran, it would be great if there were some vets on the site who could give me some info on where these recoilless versions were used. I believe the Ashau Valley was a hotspot for the 101st.....Anyway here is some information on my vehicle: Sorry the hood number was too feint to see as the previous owner had rubbed too much paint away!

Body No: 93717

Date of Delivery: 6 - 69

Also has a refurbishment tag on rear diff: TMA AdD 10 - 73 - would like to know where this was Taiwan???

I am absolutely positive you will be hearing from Ken, Our ID expert. Me may even pay you a visit since he is a fellow countryman. As a matter of fact with all of those vehicles you probably already know him.

From what I can see, it looks Portuguese.
When you go to war, you go to war all the way. You don't go to war piecemeal.
You go, and you go to win.
