My intent in relaying the experience I had this morning is not to stir up the MUTT name firestorm again, but to add some more information concerning this long-time debate.

I took an M151A2 hood to the local UPS depot today to ship. The place didn't open until 11:00 and I got there at 10:00, so I was waiting an hour for it to open. While I was waiting another car drove up and he was early too.

We struck up a conversation to kill the time and the question came up about what was in the very large box I was shipping. Not wanting to be too specific I said it was a Jeep hood. He asked me who made the Jeep and I said there were a number of companies including Ford and AM General.

He than told me he was drafted in 1961 and was in until 1963, and was activated for the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He was stationed in some armored unit at Ft. Hood. He said they went by train from Texas to Florida to support a possible invasion of Cuba.

He then told me they had some Ford Jeeps in their unit. Then, he said out of the blue, and I quote, "We had a nickname for them. We called them MUTTs."

So, there is an example of someone who, while in the service, did call the M151 a MUTT. I just thought this spontaneous use of the term MUTT to describe an M151 by someone in the service in 1962, and not in the military vehicle hobby, was an interesting fact to add to the debate.

They also say "it was an improved jeep, built between 1964 and 1969". Wrong..

I'll stir it some. Too bad we can't make poll threads.

All,

When asked do you say

1) M - one - five - one
or
2) M one-fifty-one?

I tend to say #1 but have heard both used.

My experience was always "M one-five-one", jeep or "quarter-ton".

A side note, my battalion used M113A1 APCs. We referred to them as "tracks" or M one-one-three", don't recall hearing "M one-thirteen".

We all have our experiences, and in Services that rotated lots of personnel through over long periods of time, I have no doubt that the mystic Ford pamphlet that referred to the M151 as a MUTT acronym resulted in an accepted, yet little-remembered, use of that term.
