You do realize that without the shocks you could extend the control arm on a bump and drop the spring out and or more likely blow a u joint very easily due to over angling it. They are at the limit at the end of the shock travel.

Yup, and in certain circumstances you would be absolutely correct. In my circumstance, not a chance. I drove this around town much like one would drive around a large parking lot. No way am I putting the junk shocks back in just for cruising up and down a few streets, only to have to remove them once again! Too much work for too little payoff.

Says he as he is rolling down the road with no brakes after the halfshaft broke off and took out the brake line. And no, the emergency brake will not work when the rear drivline is no longer attached. And NO, you will not be able to get it into four wheel drive when it is rolling with the front wheels turning and the rears not. (broken shaft, remember?) Can you see I have had this argument before? If you don't believe me ask Fil Bonica, he has lived it in real time!

C'mon guys. Take a breath.

You can craft a set of circumstances for a vehicular tale that ends in utter disaster all day, every day, especially starting with any vehicle that has a single line brake system.....but putting down a paved residential street is NOT going to have the vehicle so off plumb that the suspension hyperextends and since the axles are now completely renewed the odds that they'll magically and inexplicably self destruct is far-fetched at best so, no, I utterly disagree. I will go so far as to acknowledge that driving without the shocks allows for potential disaster under some driving conditions and these are circumstances that should be understood. Et curantis numquam fit cave!

The major issue with driving without rear (or front) shocks is far simpler than that of certain annihilation.... the vehicle handles very poorly and that is compounding the already poor handling characteristics of the vehicle when it does have shocks.

Not that I necessarily need to respond to this but, for the benefit of the readers, I've driven this truck enough (and I've not been hurtling around town like Mario Andretti) to satisfy myself that the rear end is properly sealed and no longer requires my attention. The truck is now sufficiently mobile to allow me to clear my driveway to work on something else and that is pretty much all there is to it. We do have some idiots in my family but quite frankly, I'm not one of them.

So, Fil, if you would care to expand upon your horror story, I'd love to hear it but I'm willing to bet that it is far and away different than mine. So, how about it, Fil? Care to share?

2006
Going down the road at about 30 mph heard a loud thunk in the rear of the jeep:
Hit the brakes to slow down.
No brakes!
Was approaching a lighted intersection; fortunately light was green.
Turned and stopped about a quareter mile later:
After i recovered my composure had jeep towed home.
Autopy showed left outer rear axleshaft u joint failed causing shaft to snap brake line.
The rest is history.
Hope this helps explain that situation.

Out of curiosity, what would you say promoted the failure of that particular u-joint?

I can say with certainty that my back axles are 100% at this time. I do understand the limitations of the design. Heck I've even experienced a catastrophic failure on a modern system with dual reservoirs so things can and do happen but to suggest that I was risking life and limb under my current circumstances seems a bit contrived.

Let's not blow this out of proportion here, nobody said you were risking life and limb. I said "As he rolls down the street with no brakes". We all know you are driving sanely, this is more about vehicle damage and possibly damage to another vehicle in the process. When we put this information out there it is not directed solely at you, it is put out there for the hundreds that also read this forum so they now know what can happen if they do this. They may not have been aware that this could possibly happen. The points have been made, let's just let it slide.

Agreed. But since we're on the topic, had any effort been made to deal with the problem of catastrophic brake failure owing to severed lines? Seems to me that someone would have since these had such a long service life.

The way the front floors seem to rot out first, is it me or does anyone else picture flintstone brakes?

The only way would be a dual system, anything is doable. You would have to fabricate a bracket to hold a dual cylinder up under there and then find a cylinder with both front and rear bores the same size as the stock one. The lines would be easy. Filling the master cylinder would not be easy! The other option would be to extend the brake rod into the engine compartment and put the master cylinder there.

Tracking number for my new shocks says they're in Dallas. I'm going to be traveling to Africa for a few days so they should be there waiting for me when I get home! Y'all be good while I'm gone.
