Just a note to whomever might be reading this. If you buy a vehicle on bill of sale alone, be prepared to lay out some fairly serious money if you intend to title the vehicle for road use.

Here's my learning experience. I bought my truck with a bill of sale from a person I trust. He had no title and he got the MUTT as trade for some labor he performed. It also appears that, like so many of these former military vehicles, my MUTT was never, ever titled. Around here that is not uncommon as many of these former military vehicles are used on ranches and hunting leases and usually get trailered wherever they go.

In any case, my DMV set me on the path to getting a title for my MUTT (a bonded title to be more specific) which had me dealing with a specific insurance agency who was recommended by DMV. Their service cost me $150 up front, with an additional $100 for a one-time purchase for the bond. In Texas you are also required to get a safety inspection for the vehicle as that is part of the process of documentation, which is $7. As some of you know, in Texas, if you register your MV as a former military vehicle it is exempt from inspection but inspection IS necessary for this process.

The whole process went very smoothly. I just received all the paperwork I will need and I will have to lay out $353 to the DMV for the completion of the process plus tax, title and license. After three years (provided no one contests ownership) I get a clear title (which will probably cost extra) and yes, in the meantime, bonded titles can be transferred should I decide to sell it.

So the total process cost $710. Something for everyone to think about.

Today was the day of days. I wandered into the tax office with my stack of papers for a bonded title and plunked down $356 for the tax, a brand new title and license plates walked out the newest, official owner of this MUTT.

My son and I went out for celebratory tacos and took Booger for a spin around town and along the way, snapped a few photos. Still a ways to go on this truck but I have many other projects, not the least of which is my M2 half track which has waited far too long for me to get back to it! Here's a few pics from this morning...

as I said before, really great looking jeep. Only thing I don't like is the plate on the grille.

That's great news that you got a title. Sounds like your DMV knows their stuff if you try to do that at a DMV in Harris county you would be there for hours apon hours telling them how to do it in their own system. Trust me in Harris county Former military plate confuse the DMV lol. Mutt is looking good.

I've encountered some of that here and they've had to call down to the main office for guidance before. On the stuff that would probably be abnormal to them, I always go in and make the inquiries first without expecting to get anything done immediately. Our small town ladies don't know everything and they know they don't know everything so we simply make a cooperative effort to get through it and everyone comes away happy. I know it's gotta be tough taking it slow, particularly in the big city where the lines are out the door and everyone is in a hurry. Try to tell someone in the DMV for the first time that your former military-registered vehicle is exempt from inspection AND mandatory insurance and their eyes kinda roll back in their head, they turn blue and then they pass out.

Just looked at the photo I posted, taken at the low water crossing. Unfortunate coincidence but I assure you that NO, I do not have a Purple Martin bird house mounted as an antenna at the right rear corner of my truck, nor do I have a flagpole at the left rear corner! This is what happens when I let my son take the pictures, Rick!

Actually I thought that was a well framed picture. Now that I know he can take good pics and I know you don't like to be in them it is time to start offering bribes to the kid.

If you're going to bribe him, make it good! None of this kids-n-candy stuff. :D

Offer him a MUTT of his own and I'm sure you'll have his undivided attention.
