I have not had much time to work on the Mutt lately. I did pick up a sheet of 18ga sheet metal today though. My underbody repair kit arrived yesterday and I was surprised that it was packaged in 1989! Right now it looks like I only need the front cross members but I will do the whole bottom when I get it into the shop and on a rotisserie.

I would not cut out good metal and replace it just because you got the kit!

The ADD has been in overdrive since I bought the Mutt.
I went crazy buying parts..I have had to put most in storage because my shed is falling apart and I have not built my shop yet :?
Kind of put the cart before the horse...
Thanks Rick,
My kit came with the install manual and I thought I would have to install the whole kit for it to be done correctly.
Thanks Fil, I accidentally cut up my instructions opening the box but was able to tape them back together..Doh
The gas tank has been a real SOB, I have to cut out a portion of the top and replace it because there are way too many pin holes. Crazy, the bottom is fine and the top half is the problem.
I am trying to make a plan on how to proceed, get it running and driving or tear it completely down.
On a totally different subject, anyone else love unpacking well preserved military parts? The military takes NOS to a whole new level.

You obviously got lucky and got some of the good NOS stuff, Many of us have gotten rusty, corroded and sometimes unusable NOS parts. Ask Horst about his NOS, in the packaging engine sometime.
Mr. Dibbles is another that got a bad NOS engine but Horst had the best one.

Wow, that would suck!
I have been very lucky then. The underbody kit has zero rust, the fording kit and heater kit parts that I have looked at look great.
I have purchased gaskets, suspension components, lights, gauges, top all without a problem. I hope my luck holds out!
I have all of the major stuff plus rebuild kits for diffs, trans, X-fer and engine. I am holding off on tires and batteries until I decide if I am going full restoration or not.
I have owned 4 CJ5s and an M-37 but this is the first time I have had the tools and money to really do things right. Don't get me wrong my CJs were great but I borrowed tools and improvised a lot, I did not know how to weld and I was always broke. During that time I learned so much and had a blast doing it. It is fun to still learn but to have a little more in the way of a budget and tools.
When I was in high school, Howard the yard supervisor at Sam Winer, would let me roam the lots looking at all the military vehicles. I owned a 1968 CJ 5 with the Dauntless V6 and I would find military parts to beef it up and to give it a military look. Howard always took time to answer my questions and to pull parts for me. They had a Mutt they would drive around the various yards and I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. That was 25 years ago...

I have been busy on stripping the MUTT down and working on some of the smaller assemblies.
Image
I started with the carb and totally tore it down. I thoroughly cleaned all of the parts and then I followed the directions in the wiki and depot manual on how to rebuild. I used both the soft and hard parts kit. I removed the venturi, it was crooked in the throttle body. I used a pin punch and inserted it into the brass tube to provide support while grabbed the tube with pliers and removed it. It worked well and i did not damage the tube. Then I removed the set screw that presses into the bottom of the venturi and tapped the venturi out. When I reinstalled the venturi I dimpled the bottom so the set screw had a positive divot to screw into, additionally I reversed the pin punch technique and set the tube to the specified depth.

Next was the distributor. I hot tank these parts in a diluted solution of Purple Power de-greaser in a crock pot and heat them up for about 20 min then rinse with warm soapy water. For small steel parts and screws I use the same method then hot tank them in Evapo Rust in the crock pot over night. The Evapo Rust works great removing rust and leaves nice clean parts.

Then I repainted the dist cover and housing with matte black engine paint

I still have to reassemble the dist. I have a new coil and electronic ignition. I still need to test the capacitor prior to re-install
