Clear coat over paint

Unread post by Mulerider » May 30th, 2017, 6:06 pm

Just spray painted my 1967 M151A1 with the GSC Paint. Someone suggested using a clear coat over that. Has anyone tried that, if so what type of clear coat did you use.

If the base coat was not designed to be clear coated then you are going to run into paint compatibility issues. And if the GSC is Gillespie then it is a single stage paint and it will not be compatible with any of the automotive paints. May look good at first but withing a year you will have crazing and peeling. If you insist on trying it be sure to wait a month or two for the paint that is on there to fully cure and be done outgassing before you put anything on it.

Hi Rick, thanks for the reply
It is the Gillespie paint. I didn't see a reason for adding a clear coat but a friend thought it might give it some extra protection. I don't want it to have more gloss than it already does. I will leave it like it is.
Thanks for all the work you guys do. Don 't think I would have ever been able to complete my repairs without seeing what others have done.
