That thing is looking pretty good!

I would think it's gonna be a bit ticklish trying to stuff that power pack back in with a strap all the way out to the tail of that transfer case. Belly wrap that thing with a synthetic web ratchet strap. They are particularly nice because you can adjust them so that they take some of the weight to begin with, rather than relying upon them to simply catch the whole shebang if the loop lets go.

The likelihood that the loop will fail is dramatically increased if it is pulled in any direction other than straight up. So, using an engine leveling device for your pull or your install is also really a very good idea as (among other things) it places the lifting chains so that they are vertical besides the obvious which is you won't have to wrestle with that engine to get it at the correct attitude to settle onto the mounts. If you can't borrow one, you can pick one up for something like thirty bucks at Harbor Freight and they work just fine.

Thanks for the comments TJ. Might be a bit expensive at Harbor Freight by the time I add the cost of travelling there :)

Must say I am looking forward to it finally being on the road - some 22 months since the restoration work started...

This week we got closer to completion with the engine going back in. While we wait for the new rocker arm and eight new rockers to be delivered we can get on with other preparations.

Is it just me or does that water pump seem to have an extra long nose on it?

It is NOS and the same as the original. I think it is the camera angle.

Well today was to be a good day! Installed the radiator and filled with coolant but - Aaaargh!! - just filling the radiator caused water to leak past the head gasket!!!

Checked the head bolts torque, all correct, and could not see why this should be so off with the head. Checked again that the head and block were not warped. Looked at the gasket and it did not seem it had been sealing properly. Did some internet searching and found pictures of the head gasket which had LANDS AROUND THE WATER JACKET HOLES! Which, as you can see in the photo, ours did not. Who makes head gaskets that don't have these lands?

OK, ordered a replacement so once more the project is rescheduled :)

I have the same head gasket I guess I should replace it before continuing then or coat it with a sealant

Howard, As I read this I am sitting next to my NOS head gasket. It is the old fashioned metal style gasket with no fiber on it. Here are a couple pictures. One thing to check which I am sure you have since the motor is all new, but the head bolt hole sometimes were not tapped all the way down. Run a bottoming tap all the way down each head bolt hole, be sure to use a bottoming tap as a regular tap will not reach the bottom threads.

Lucky no gun was at hand ;)

Rick we checked the bolts were threaded ok and lengths were all fine. The gasket I have ordered looks like yours. When we looked at the old gasket it had those lands and they had flattened out to form a nice seal.

Be sure to get some Permatex copper spray gasket and coat both sides of the metal gasket with it and then remember this is old school, you have to retorque it according to the book.

I am looking at the gasket you took off and it appears to be the correct gasket for that engine. There would not be any embossing around the water or oil passages on that type of gasket and I don't see any reason why it would have leaked. Those gaskets are much more forgiving than the metal ones so be sure to check everything again. Even put that old one back one and tighten it down and see exactly where the water is coming out and investigate very closely the problem.

Rick, I'm curious as to where that gasket, with an assembly date of 2009, came from? Everything on the tag looks "Big Army", except it's applying to a motor that is decades old? Especially a bar code!

It came from a friend that sells on E-bay. I get much better prices since I have been buying from him for probably 20 years. A lot of these parts are still made and supplied buy the big military suppliers. You can only buy from them as a registered dealer so that leaves us out but the guys selling to us can buy in bulk from them.

Well my project has come to a screaching halt due to the need for a head gasket! I ordered one from Kemper Parts and when it had not appeared after a couple of weeks sent an email. It turned out that DHL Germany (not the same as DHL that most know) had accepted the parcel for delivery and then forgot to send it on!! So that was rectified and tracking shows it has been delivered after a further week or so - back to Kemper Parts #$#*&#! Now I am waiting to hear what the next step in this saga of Teutonic efficiency will be....
