M3A1 Scout Car project

Unread post by njjeeper » January 23rd, 2018, 11:38 am

I know its not a Mutt but thought some folks may like to see it. It's a 1942 Lot 5 M3A1 White Scout Car. Needs pretty much everything and will take a while to get right!

Hey I know that car! Well I saw that car. Had a maintenance shelter tent delivered by the same guy who brought your scout car. We met up Saturday morning so I could get the tent. The tent was under that car and the poles were strapped in the back.

Wow! Looks like a section of the skate ring.. Have those reproduced and the world will beat a path to your door. Believe it or not, somewhere around here I actually have an original blueprint with all the details for the skate ring for the Scout Car.

Scout cars are dirt simple.. You'll have that puppy going in no time but be forewarned....when you do your wheel bearings and seals, keep your hubs perfectly organized. Don't ask me how I know.

Cheers,
TJ

Figuring out how to bend that section of replacement skate rail is keeping me up at night :)

Check your manuals. I believe one of them has the technical drawings for the skate rail which, in cross section, kind of looks like a little railroad track. I gave a lot of thought to making my own at one time and happily, I never got that far into it but I will say this. If you want to figure it all out, you'll need cardboard to cut patterns. Lots and lots of cardboard (Oh, and aspirin!). Banged my head many a time getting in and out of one with the skate rail in place so if you manage it, you'll soon wish you hadn't. But here's the thing. Even if you manage to fab one up, I doubt you'll actually be able to shoot anything off it unless it's hardened because the trollies will almost certainly transmit that recoil straight to the rail and mild steel just ain't gonna cut it. And trollies are REALLY expensive.

I can't speak for Guy but he should have a look at the technical drawings so as to give a more professional opinion.
