WIZS A2 Build

Unread post by KWIZ87 » June 27th, 2019, 6:43 am

Hello again I moved my A2 build post over to here and will update on my progress the further I get. This is a continuation from my New Member thread. Just a recap, I replaced, master cylinder, all brake lines and hardware, tires, rebuilt the carb, batts, distributor, spark plug wires, Batt tray and I am currently in the process of having the engine head checked out. Early style head. She is a Y cut Mutt but other wise solid. Batt floor will need replaced at some point.

Rick mentioned that the data plate is a repro which I suspected and am wondering where else to look for information on other tags? Currently I am in the process of removing the rad to get it cleaned up.

The head checked out great and the valves were ground. Only issue is the one exhaust boss has a worn out thread hole but that can be mended. Didn't want to just throw it away on account of one fouled boss. Rad is getting cleaned up and I'm in the process of ordering new gaskets and misc parts. In regards to painting the head does the Red Oxide primer and semi gloss OD from Gellipsie hold up well to the heat?

No, you need hi temp engine paint. How much driving do you do with this vehicle? If not much and it is all around town and low speed (not flat out on the highway) then the old style head is fine. But if this is going to be a daily driver and you plan on running 55 mph with it then the later head is better OR have hardened valve seats put in the old head. Unleaded gas is really hard on valve seats since there is no lead to lubricate them and act as a cushion as they close. The late style head has these seats in it from the factory since it was manufactured after the onset of unleaded gas.

Thank you for the response Rick. Was looking at a daily driver for summer, spring, fall. So I will hunt down a later head to change it out and bench the early one.

Progress: Well I installed the head using the updated exhaust gasket kit. Tried running it and would not stay running. After confirming proper dist placement with oil pump, good spark, clean plugs, it turns out the intake was leaking along the lower portion of the gaskets. So I removed the intake and doubled the gaskets with Permatex copper beads. As was mentioned before about the new exhaust gasket kits offsetting the intake fit. Waiting for cure then will try again. Unfortunately in this process I did loose another boss in the head but was able to mend it thus far.

Well it is running good now. No leaks! So far. Just need to fine tune timing. More pics to come. My oil drain plug is right on top of the exhaust pipe though. Kinda looks like the rubber mounts may have collapsed a bit have to look further into it.
