What are you planning to do with the cut lip at the top of the fenderwell under the new fender top? That is a bare edge that will be pone to rust and it is going to be hard to seal that area since it is open to the tire.

It will be sprayed with primer before installing the fender and maybe I'll use some type of sealer on the inside only. I thought about the rust issues but also thought that basically every seam on the truck is that way so 2 more wouldn't hurt!

I know how you work (so there's really little chance of trouble) but have you laid the hood on to see how its lower edges will be in relation to your fender tops?

I'm excited. Now it's really starting to look like something! Please take a step back and take a picture of the whole thing as it sits now.

Cheers,
TJ

Should be the same as stock as the rear height is set by the original tab on the fire wall and the front height is set by what is left of the original front fender. I will put the hood on and eye ball it just because.

I'm sure with you at the helm there is very little chance for error. I just keep thinking of that poor fellow who recently had all that work accomplished and then found the hood was short (or more likely, his fenders were too low).

Driver side fender top is now ready to be installed. Has a little bit of a gap at the bottom of the front edge but will not be a problem as I'll use an aluminum backer. I like to have about a .030" - .040" gap when doing a butt weld as the weld will be ground flush and I want full penetration. Also took a picture of the primer I'm using between panels. I take a scribe and scratch off the primer in the plug weld area it works very well.

No we never did hear how that played out. I see one of the reasons why you're not terribly concerned about hood gap, given that you still have the original inner fenders in place.

Are you welding through that or cleaning off each spot?

I scratch off the primer for each plug weld and also use a round file for the inside edge of the slots to remove the primer. Do not have any issue welding by doing this.

I've got an ongoing test.... two pieces of sheet metal, painted with POR15 top coat, drilled and the primer scratched off.
The button welds are solid.... let's see how they hold up next to the building with the salt spray from the ocean. I'm 300 yards from the ocean with regular/steady onshore breezes.
The POR has held up very nicely to scraps I've put out there in the past.

Driver side front fender is installed. Need to do some grinding and blending but that's the easy part. Next will be removing the driver side seat support as the one pictured was installed long before we made replacement parts. After that I need to build a driver side toe board and then the dash.

Obviously, he's cleaned up his work space. See those anchors in the floor? That's how he keeps his monster chained down when he's not in the room!
:D :P
