My 1967 M151A1 restoration project

Unread post by CaBoy72 » October 15th, 2013, 4:32 pm

Hello everyone, my brother found this M151A1 sitting next to an old shop out in New Hampshire. After talking with the owner and seeing the pics he sent me I bought what I thought was a running mutt with a little rust. If I can get the pics to load up you will see this was far from a little rust. I have dubbed it the Flinstone mobile. I picked it up for a good price and he threw in three spare take motors, 2 A1's and a A2. I also got a spare tranny one spare wheel and the unibody repair kit. I love this forum as it helps give hope and ideas of what I will have some day. So any input would be greatly appreciated. I hope to get the pics loaded up here shortly. The guy I bought this from has a couple M725's and a M43 if any of you know some interested I those.

Welcome to the forum, Dan. That is one rough mutt but I've seen guys (on here) start out with worse. Noticed the wasp's nest next to the air cleaner... :o . I had one inside mine when it arrived. They entered via the fording snorkle & drowned in the oil bath inside. Pretty effective "bug zapper". Good luck with the resto!

My M151A1 restoration project

Unread post by CaBoy72 » October 15th, 2013, 6:01 pm

Thanks Matt, yeah I am pretty good at fabrication and body work. I have been a diesel mechanic and novice body man for years. I just did an M35A2 with a matching M105A1 trailer that project took me a year. This project will require a lot more time the the truck did. But I'm still excited to get this done. I am in the process of reinforcing the rear of the jeep so I can put it up on a rotisserie.

I don't want to be the wet blanket here but the fact that you have no rear suspension left that is basically a parts donor. There are no repair parts made for that section and to fabricate it is going to take more time and resource than it is worth. What you need to do now is find a better body to use as a foundation for the build. The very first thing to check on a M-151 is the underneath, the unibody rails are only sheet metal and in states where salt is used in the winter these vehicles will be toast.

I have been looking for another body but have not had any luck yet. I have even tried to find another rear section that I could cut and weld in place. Again with no luck. I don't have the finances to buy a whole new body just way out of my wallet resources. I have heard of a guy here local that has two mutts one he uses for parts so I have been trying to track him down. I just hate to part the whole thing out and punt.

Thanks Dan and thank you csmith. I have always wanted one since my dad took me for a ride in one when I was 7 or 8. I love old military vehicles. I am pretty resourceful when it comes to getting parts. But this project is a whole new elephant for me.

Welcome Dan, You will for sure need that underbody kit.  I'm with Rick, it will need a lot of work to fix that rear suspension, but it can be done. As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of talented guys on this site that will walk you right thru it. Another body will be hard to find, if u did it would be in the same condition. Hambone

I know that M151. I was looking at it this summer, not to buy but I was hanging out with the former owner and looking over his collection.
