62 Contract Engine Rebuild

Unread post by Austringer » November 9th, 2013, 8:23 pm

Decided to pull the head off of the 62 contract engine so I could clean the sludge fully as well as do a few other things. Glad I did as it looks like a mouse lived in one cylinder for a while. I'm going to strip the block down to check the bearings (and more than likely replace them based on the rest of the engine condition. I'll more than likely put new pistons, rings, etc (the block is still standard), I'll wait until I hear back from the machine shop about if the engine can be honed or if it needs to be bored .010 over. I can hone it myself but I'd rather just let them do it. One thing that I've never seen before is the pilot bearing for the transmission input shaft on this engine is a actual bearing and not a bushing. I'll replace it when I'm there. I'm also going to get the shop to redue the clutch surface as it has some wear in it. The pressure plate, I'll just replace it.

Here are the pics.

It is always a bearing. Jeep MB/GPW/M201 have a bushing, I upgraded my M201 to a bearing

That engine appears to have a lot of miles on it and very few oil changes.definitely an oil burner. Definitely non detergent oil. But overall it looks to be in excellent condition. The water jackets in the block, from what I can see at the deck surface, are nice and clean. That head gasket would have caused detonation issues if you had run it that way with the rusted edges. I think you have a keeper there.

I'm going to pull her apart today, mic the bearings etc and she how she looks. I don't think I'll need to boil her as the water jacket looks pretty good. I'm hoping I'll just need to hone. I'll more than likely go with the NOS pistons, rings and new rod and potentially new main bearings( as stated before). Might have some valve work done while I have the head off. I'll replace all the gaskets and put her back together.

As much as I hate to say it I think AJP is going to be the only place you will find the pistons and rings. I would boil it just to get the gunk out of it, once you start running good oil that garbage will be breaking loose and running through the engine. You will end up with a clogged oil pick-up.

Looks like I'm going to replace the cam as it has some over headed areas on it. (brownish). any one have a NOS one for sale.

Also, I am happy to say that the connecting rod play is well in spec! 1 and 2 are .005 3 and 4 are .006. Could not get a dial indicator into check the play on the oil pump but since I'm replacing the cam, it would not really matter anyway.... :-)

Now I have to find my cylinder reamer so I can get the pistons out. Then it's time to check the run out and cam play, then off to the machine shop so they can measure the cylinders and see if they are good and proper. Then either hone or bore it over. Once the crank is out, I'll mic it to see if it will need to be turned down (hope not).

Pulled the pistons out tonight after spending about an hour using a cylinder reamer to remove the carbon and ridge at the top of the cylinders. Going to check the backlash etc of the cam and crank tomorrow and see how they look prior to pulling the crank out so I can get the block down to the machine shop. Tonights question, what are the specs of the cylinder so I know if it needs to be bored .010 over? What are the wear limits for the std bore?

Thanks

I know all that is in the -34. I don't have it downloaded here at work and wouldn't have time to look it up in the morning. If you still need it by this evening I will get it for you.

Whew. Looks like the Exxon Valdez ran aground in that thing! If that machine shop has a tank I'd boil it, that crap will break free with detergent oil and come back to haunt you. Looks good though. Could get away with just fresh rings if the pistons don't show scoring or bad wear. How many miles did it have if you know?
Never seen mice in the cyl., seen them in the intake and mufflers of old cars and trucks. Hate it when they blow out of the exhaust when you fire them up. Stink like hell too! Hedge hogs were the big concern when I was in Germany. They'd eat your wiring up with a quickness.
