Footman Loops

Unread post by lpcoating » November 18th, 2013, 5:48 pm

I'm having tooling quoted for making footman loops to go with the other parts that CMD is making. We can make them in house at this time but it is a little bit of messing around compared to having a "one hit" tool. The tooling is not cheap and my question is how many people would be only interested in footman loops for their projects? I'm thinking that the number of footman loops by themselves would be pretty low and that we are better to keep making them with multiple set ups without investing in the tooling. I'm open to some of your thoughts...

Unless it makes a big difference in the mfg process I would not invest in costly tooling for such a minor part.
I must have a dozen downstairs sitting in a drawer that's after building a couple of Jeeps.

i guess if the tooling is expensive you'd have to sell a lot of them for it to pay off. The other side of the coin though, is that just about every kind of military vehicle uses some, not just our jeeps....

The problem is that there are so many varieties of them. We use at least two, a bolt on and a weld on. Mostly the weld on. That is not used anywhere else that I know of but as was mentioned, there is not a big demand. I am thinking it would be fairly simple to machine a die to receive round stock the correct size and press form it to the shape of the loop. Then stamp the ends flat for the spot weld area. You could make that set on a milling machine easily and with a couple of aligning pins and springs it could be used in a home press to crank out 20-30 a night.

I just looked at Richards videos.................... looks like someone beat me to the idea!

They still seem to be readily available, but that's basically how I made mine, plus a little heat.

Thanks for the links. We have a water jet that can make that a very simple job. I'll see what I can come up with.
