AA1PR's 1966 Stevens M416 Build

Unread post by AA1PR » December 5th, 2013, 5:01 pm

Ok so I bit the bullet and picked up one locally. I am not into military retoration, my is for off road & camping use
Even though I was originally gong to buy a M101 off Rovertrader on EXPO, [the national gaurd was up here fixing the roads and realized it was more (larger) than what I needed]

The guy I got it from had a service manual and records of all repairs in a binder. This trailer originally came from Plattsburg Airforce base, about 100 miles from here. Looks like the redcross got it & the seller acquired it from them later on.

had no issues getting it registered either

this may be a bit smaller than what I want but here is my project nonetheless

Here are a couple of short videos:

I will add more photos/videos when it is light out to show what I have to work with...

Ground clearance

Our rough sanding shows the various layers of paints of different colors, it is not rust as previously thought, just paint showing through it must have peeled or cracked off & they kept covering it with additional layers, even though there are some small spots of rust mixed in there. The rough sanding allows the POR15 to grab hold. Not worried about it being perfectly smooth, as my intention is to cover the outside with the bed-liner as well.

And finally our finished coated side

Tomorrow we will Herculiner the sides we did today will warm(er) weather presents itself..

Ok so its not perfect by any means, but solid enough I have no doubts
I got my little Mikie to do the dirty work tonight...
Interior floor, there is a dark brown & a light tan in the floor through all of the scratches & what not

Almost done with Rust Shield coating on bed floor

My son also got the interior side panel spots addressed with the grinder wire brush & those coated as well, by the time I went out to check on him @ 6:30pm EST it was too dark to get a good photo of all he accomplished

still have to eventually think about what I am going to do or need for a tailgate & cover, those will be later

Oct 9th, my son started off sanding the rear & front of the trailer and applying the POR15 sealer, then we went to go take some autumn scenic photographs since the trees are ripe here this weekend, the sky, trees and temps are perfect !
After a couple of hours drying time, he then proceeded by giving the bed a second coat of Herculiner, after sweeping out all the leaves…

Added coating to both sides, plus front & rear of trailer as well

Not too sure now that I like the look of the lining on the exterior of the trailer, I guess I don’t have to worry about tree branch scratches etc

Now we need to work on a tailgate and lid/cover for the trailer. here you can see I have it dropping as a tailgate I have since redone this and it opens to the drivers side so you can safely enter & remove things from the passengers side

Come spring time we will work on the undercarriage.

decided it was time to alter the rear gate into a door. I thought that having it open to the passenger side was a safer option when traveleing per se

Ok to complete the trailer a bit more we finally added a tailgate. it was cut in the back anyways from the previous owner hacking it up, its not perfect but better for my use

for this I opted to go with 1/4 aluminum diamond plate.

now I dont have to worry about stuff falling out the back etc

photos later when I go back

the next & probably not last thing is some sort of cover for the trailer

scoured the forum & found a few interesting ideas I may contemplate & try

Also changed out the mil lights for waterproof/submersible lights, even though they need to be raised in my opinion

I have been thinking I need a cover for mine

my idea is made from 1/2 plywood

I want to be able to acess the trailer from both ends seperately

from the toungue end a 2ft lid

so I am thinking a 1ft section across the middle after that will fixed in place

& then finishing up with say a 4ft or whatever teh correct length section on the rear

on the top will be those thule upright bike carriers mounts, so when both lids are closed & locked the bikes can be mounted there

this allows me to keep a better eye on them as we are traveling

that way all the good gear can be covered up & locked up while the bikes remain above & upright & even those can be locked up with maybe a simple eye bolt through the middle fixed section

let me insert a simple drawing to get your opinion(s)

or maybe something like this will fit my needs better

where the light green section is fixed

& the dark green section opens upwards towards the lighter colored section; since the rear tailgate opens in that direction the pieces would be cut on a 45 degree angle to hopefully create a somewhat weather tight closing
