Mutt m151 A1 1959

Unread post by gospo » December 29th, 2013, 10:52 am

Hi everyone,
As I promised on one of my posts asking You for help, I would like to introduce my M151 A1.
I bought it 12 years ago and it looked like starnge 4x4 car used by some gay in race competitions. It has strange coluour, sport steering wheel, no any sign of military purpose.
I colected parts form all over the world including USA, GERMANY, BELGIUM, POLAND, ENGLAND - also literature, photos and finally finished my project. It took so long becouse of other especially vw projects, lluck of time and money.
Today there are last repairts like changeing all oil, fluids etc an my Mutt is almost ready.

As for me studyind history of Mutt there are strange some things:
- there is year 1959 in registration document - isn't it to early like for a A1?
original number acording to plates is 2 N 6682 - Anyon can help me with identification of kind of army, military unit and maybe year of origin?
- untypical hood solid extra grill with mounting brackets to the fender - looks like some extra equipement - any idea of purpose?
diferent than typical one finish of fuel tank - i bought typical plug but there is no metal sheet around
- electrical windshield motors - different than in A2
- different tires - much bigger than usual ones
- electrical fuel pump in engine appartement like in A2

I would like to ad photos but as a new user I have no idea how to - help is needed;)

Thats for that moment all.Any suggestions, questions?I'm happy to answer:)
Best regards from Poland
Marc

1959 was the very first year and I have never seen one in production. The earliest I have seen is 1960 and that is a straight 151. The A1 came out in 1964. It sounds like you have a conglomeration of parts from many years and sources, both civilian and military. Pictures will tell the story. Pictures have to be uploaded to a photo sharing site, I use Photobucket, before they can be downloaded to this site. Photobucket makes it real easy, click on the link that says IMG next to your picture in Photobucket and then paste that to your post in G838, done.

Well it is an early, The tail lights have been changed around with the addition of the lights above the stockers so that eliminates using that as a tell tale. The turn signals appear to be added on with spacers under them and not the original fender supports. The front seats are later seats but the E-brake is early. If the floor drains are oval shaped that is also early. The gas tank is a little strange. The gas can is on backwards. (we love to get people on that one!) Nice tires, they look like retreads?

Gas can I put especialyy that way - all yellow signs can be visible;)
Gas tank looks in general this same as normal in A1 exept tube for gas - there was civilian uniwersal stopper/plug you can by on every gas station - i bought original and there was problem to install it becouse of diggerent diameter - inside original it is plastic one that i can close the tube but it is not visible.
tires i think that you are right - it looks like someone put another layer of rubber to old ones - they are Michelin each.
Fenders exactly have no mounting points to turn signals - i put thet that way. What does it tell us, that fenders are not original or there was no turn signals and it was very firs series of mutt?
I noticed also that front fender is diferent tahn A1 - A1 are open from the other side mine is blinded on each corner in 10 cm distance from back side.

Thanks for all sugestions.
An what about the number - 2 N 6682 - does it tell me enything? Is there an option to check the history of the car?

Marek,

Gas can is still wrong, the idea is that if fuel spills out, it will not get in touch with the hot exhaust. But of course that should only concern you if you actually have fuel in it. In Germany it is forbidden anyway, that's why I have a water can instead.

The heat shield for the fording exhaust is installed upside down. No big deal, just not correct. The 90° elbow at the top the exhaust should have a clamp.

I believe the bottom of the rear panel has been fabricated different from the original. each end of the rear panel should drop down lower than the center of the rear panel.
