'77 A2 - My first project

Unread post by Vzike » May 5th, 2014, 4:59 pm

OK, here I go. I'll start this at the very beginning.

I put my down payment on a MUTT I found on Craig's List and am arranging with an auto transport company to ship it to me in Singer Island, FL. The CL ad for the MUTT was: http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/4447861427.html (What do you think?)

There are some pics on the ad. I'll upload some here as soon as I figure out how to do that with a MAC. I'm a PC guy who has converted recently and need to figure this out more.

I just contracted with Direct Express Auto Transport. Pickup is arranged for 7 - 14 May. Cost was $600 from Fort Worth area TX, to Singer Island, FL.
Just updated the title from 72 to 77.

The story on this was that it was at Ft Polk, prepped for the crusher and a "friend" got it set aside. It's a parts vehicle. No matching numbers. He also told me the tub was USMC. He was going to restore it, then ran out of steam. It hasn't run in a couple years.

There are minor rust outs in the floor pan and on the passenger side frame support. Other than that, the undercarriage pictures look pretty good.

Comes with the radios, rops, and four extra rims.

The MUTT has no title. I'm not sure if that is a major issue in Florida. If it is, my son is active duty stationed with the 1st SFG at Ft Lewis, but he has a GA license. I think it can be transferred to him to get a title through GA. Any suggestions on this will be very helpful.

I'd like to do this as right as my skills let me, so any and all advise and suggestions are welcome.

Welcome Vin,

Obviously the pictures don't share too much detailed information, specifically how the underside looks like. But you say that is looking fine. Other than that looks good. So maybe after the pressure washer did his job you have something really nice. There is no such thing as a USMC tub, other things make it USMC, such as fording valve, which I think I can see from the picture, the front bumper and missing hub tie downs. BTW, I don't think they had emission type equipment in 1972, that would make the year at least 1973 or earlier.

Welcome to the G8 Vin, looks like you got a pretty solid jeep there, like Horst said power wash heck out of her top and bottom to see true condition, then send lots of photos and the fellows here will let you know exactly what you have. The answers to anything you need to do are here!

I don't see any red flags there other than the missing air cleaner to carb hose. I hope it was not run that way in the obviously dusty environment it was in. The bottom rust does not look bad but extreme closeups make it hard to tell. From the looks of it though it is in good shape. It is an undercoated mutt. The story about how it was acquired leaves a lot to the imagination. I would tend to doubt that one. There are no pictures in the areas of where a cut line would be so that is an unknown. I could not see the tops of the rear fenders at the corners to see if there were holes there from the ROPS that is shown. That may or may not have been in the vehicle. By the way, No M-151's have matching numbers. Come to think of it they really don't have any traceable numbers!

Rick is probably right with the ROPS. I see the light and ignition switch at their standard location. In case of ROPS installed, locations are swapped by the use of an overlay plate. This jeep most likely had no ROPS installed, but easy to tell if the holes are there.

He said the rops was never installed, he got it with, but separate from the Mutt. I'm pretty excited about it, but being new to this, also worried that I picked up one no one wanted.
Now to figure out how to get a title!

'72 A2 - My first project

Most people hate it, I love it. The Encore has some roll bar too, right ?

I like the Encore. It's red, so there is no doubt that it is not a military tub. It has a tailgate, and the undercarriage frames are different. The fenders are flat, and do not have recessed combat lights.

The Encore I have has an issue rops system that was installed when I bought it. I live on an island, and this is a daily driver, so I took it off. It really makes the vehicle "feel" top heavy. If my "new" A2 has not had the rops installed (no holes), I'm not going to put it in. When we used these in the infantry, some had the rops, some did not. In Special Forces, we took the rops off, unless we were jumping the Mutt. Truthfully, when we burned one in, the rops saved nothing.

The seller told me that the '72 A2 was never cut. He said the body had been removed to chop it, but he was able to get it before that happened. I'm not sure if it even has a VIN plate. Is there anywhere a number is stamped on the body?

Here is the Encore getting new brakes
