Re: Patching up the old girl !
WOW!
Those are some ugly welds! That's what happens when you don't read TC9-237!
The sad thing is it really doesn't take much more time to weld crap correctly. You know that weld was done over the paint, rust, dirt, mud, and grease and then the person put the truck on the road!
Looks like your truck is coming along nicely!

Re: Patching up the old girl !
Thanks WR. Getting their and you are right about the patch ! Ugly !
The new front repair panels are here and cleaned up in the blaster.
So I opened things up and guess what ? More rust ! Will need to make some more patch panels,I guess.
Patch panels won't look as good as OEM but it will be under the rust repair panel anyway !
I figured that getting this back in and then doing the floor repair is the way to go ? Floor looks to be mounted to the frames ? Its that hole unibody thing !
The dark stuff on the ground is the old "MUTT" . I swepped it up and through it out.

Pulled most of the rust. On to the patches ! Used one of HF spot weld cutters. Worked well ! My old cutter just gave up .

Re: Patching up the old girl !
On with the repair. Today I built the first panel. You will see some inside sopperts. That is because I cant make the panel used like the OEM, won't fit ! Maybe someone after me will take the whole thing apart, but not me. I know the body guys will have a field day with the way I did it.
A Little grinding and some weld primer and on the the side front panels !
Randy
P.S. was just thinking , does this repair make it a"Was a half cut " ?

Well I am one of those body guys and I think it is an excellent repair. Considering what you have to work with I think you are doing just fine.

My body working skills sux but I do know a thing or two about welding and frame repair and that repair looks just fine. I'd trust that on the highway.

Started on the driver outside rail. Stayted a cut and found something that is not supposed to be their ? The rebuilder must have jammed it in their.Going to leave it and build around it.

Almost looks stock .
Also started the tran's crossover part. Then it dawned on me that the other side will need to be repaired first !

Re: Patching up the old girl !
It's interesting that some of the guys that put these back together after the de-mill brazed them. The guy that I bought mine from said he de-milled and re-assembled 40 of these back in the 80's. He brazed all of them and told me if I welded mine it would break apart! I didn't argue with him.

Re: Patching up the old girl !
Brazing involves joining two close fitting, overlapping and very clean pieces of metal with brass. Close fitting is the key, the tighter the fit the better the weld. You cannot butt weld with brass. I doubt that was very clean either. Properly done you will not even see any brass but the metal has to overlap. And yes it is very strong IF done correctly, that is not even close.
