M718

Unread post by Hambone » October 27th, 2014, 8:05 pm

Decided to take a closer look at the 718 since it's the first project for my new shop, found more than I wanted to, a lot of rust. The panels won't be a big deal but I have rust in the rear upper spring support and that looks like a challenge to change out, something that's not included in the underbody rust repair kit. I do have a better tub that I'm thinking about using for the project, still looking for a few 718 parts, so keep your ears open. Hambone

Well, I took the advice of Halftracknut, he said this was a good deal at $1200, so when the seller reduced the price to $400, I couldn't resist. I have not put my eyes on it, only in pictures, he said the only rust was in the hood, needs motor rebuilt. Not sure if it is Growler, Encore or Titan, now I have to travel 300 miles to Texas and pick it up. Hambone

I can tell you it is not an Encore. An Encore was the most 151 look alike of all the aftermarket bodies. I think Titans were built in Texas.

Been doing a little research, best I can tell, it's a Titan, seen some that looked nice. Hope the "no rust" statement is true, tired of working on rusty stuff.

Are you going to try to build the 718 on the Titan shell?

I have another A1 tub that just needs floor panels, it had a hard top on it, will have a few holes to weld up.

Are the rear upper spring supports the same in A1 and A2?, I know the a-arm mounting is different.

Ham, the spring support sockets appear to be the same but, the cross member for the shocks are different on the A-2.

Thanks, MR
I saw the different cross member, I haven't got under there and measured but the spring mounts look the same.

The military had at one time looked into retrofitting A1's with A2 rear suspension and had the kits to do it so I am pretty sure the frame is the same with the exception of the shock mount. I don't think the kits made it past the R&D stage.

:) Not to kick sand rick but, the rear diff mounts to the A-2 rear cross member as well as the shocks. I also think it is welded closer to the spring sockets. :D

This is an A-1

After a 700 mile round trip yesterday, I made it back with the Alley Cat/Titan I bought a couple months ago, the lady said she has the title but she hasn't found it yet, so I still don't know who built it.
