My M151 restoration

Unread post by elsasser7122 » January 1st, 2015, 4:06 pm

The M151 I purchased recently, am going to start the restoration, I will do some of it, but having most of it done, all of the body work for sure, as age and arthritis has taken it's toll. I know a lot of the parts are not right, but going to try and make it as close to a 62 as we can.

The pictures make it look a lot better then it actually is. I wanted it as it was a 62 with a 2D hood number and that has been verified by Ken, as it still has the tag on the left front frame rail. Will be posting more photos of different area's and then also as we start to dismantle it. It will need a ton of work.

Can't say I have ever seen a bumper on a 151 bent down like that without all kinds if associated damage but other than that it seems to be a nice vehicle to work with. You will also be needing a canvas top to make it period correct. I can't tell what kind of bumpers ore on the top of the windshield but they should be the metal and canvas strap ones. It does have the right hood with the pin for the windshield tie down instead of the footman loop. I have that on mine and it rattles incessantly! How accurate are you going to try to get? Some of the suspension parts will be real hard to find if they are not the right ones on there. On the top, the bow to windshield bars should be folding round bars instead of the bar stock that the later ones used. Most people got rid of the round rods since they did not hold well at all and tended to come loose while driving.

Yes the bumper was in bad shape, but as of yet can't find anything else wrong, but do have the correct bumper for it. Have the correct bumpers for top of windshield, also going to put the two piece glass in, it is the correct windshield due to the defroster louvers, have the side brackets for the rear seat to set on, it also has the wrong rear seat. Has a mechanical fuel pump, going to correct that, had the wrong spare tire rim, have the correct one, had a zenith carb have the Holley to put on. The top is wrong, and was junk, as where side curtains and doors. Not going to be going back with a top as it had the M4 mount in it and I am retaining it and have the right cradle and a replica M60 to put on. Going to get the major parts period correct and go from there. Lots of work ahead, has bondo, and tons of paint smeared on. It does have the tag on the left hand frame rail, and has been verified by Ken to be a 62 2D hood number. Going to put the MP signs on and unit numbers from when I was in Germany, have some of those posted. I bought this from pictures and it looks much, much worse in real life, Bubba has been at work. I have been looking a long time for a 62. Will post more pictures of it and also the tear down and restoration.

Just so you know, they did use tops on 151's with the M4 mount. Just took the pedistal off as you have done. Only takes a second and keeps you dry. MP's hated getting wet.

Going to retain the M-14 mount on the right hand side, close the holes on the left hand side, also have the MWO for the mount and will check that it is installed in the right place, also have the oval floor drains

You are also missing the PCV valve and all of the associated plumbing to the carburetor. I am not a big fan of the Holley because you cannot get any parts for it besides a couple gaskets. No needle and seat which are the most important part. They do not run any better than the Zenith. A 62 could have had either I believe. I would like to see a better picture of that fuel pump, is that just a fuel pump or a combination pump? It looks like you have a lot of lines that are not where they belong. It looks like a fresh air line is plumbed into the valve cover where the PCV is supposed to go and there is no line on the air cleaner where that fresh air line should be.

Yes, I know a lot of stuff not right and missing, but we will try and get everything back closer to correct then it is now. I bought the vehicle sight unseen from pictures, but the fella that is doing the body work for the restoration was 30 miles away from where it was and looked at it and said I have done some much worse then this one, so I went ahead with it. I have seen it twice now since I have purchased it as I am in Kansas and it is in Minn. a 700 miles one way trip, to be honest if I would have seen it in person, probably would not be the owner now. The pictures I am posting now are from the previous owner that where sent to me. I don't have a close up of the fuel pump, and honestly did not look at it that close when I was there both times. The pervious owner got it from a museum, I have e mailed them trying to find out some more history and they have not replied to any of my e mail, will try to call a board member sometime. The Holley carb I am using has been gone thru by a carb restoration place and side linkage and etc. has all been replated and looks good. We have taken the power plant out and most of the under carriage and when I get to those pictures you will see how Bubba had been at work on it. (LOL) Larry

Larry, if you go back and search this website for photos of jeeps I am sure your evaluation of your jeep will change a significantly....your jeep looks like you are way on the ++Plus++ side , it looks to have a very solid body and that is all that is important when dealing with vehicle, all the small parts can be had rather easily either here on on e-bay....good luck with your project ...have fun with it....looking forward to more photos....
