Generic jeep

Unread post by Hambone » January 30th, 2016, 8:42 pm

Thought I would start on the Texas jeep since it will be a fairly easy rebuild, I know it's not a M151 but it is close, at least it's not an Encore. Going to replace the floors in it, they are just flat metal so they can be easily sheered at the local sheet metal shop, sorry Guy. Here are a few photos of it.

I like how they mounted the taillight, just separate the light and mount, no mounting bracket needed.

I had heard the Titan's were 11 gauge steel, it does look pretty thick.

It is heavy metal, not sure what gauge it is yet, does anyone have a good process for removing undercoating? the best way I have found is with a little heat and a scraper, if I have to do it this way, I will have to move it outside, I think I caught a buzz in 5 minutes. I'm thinking about having it sand blasted but not sure how well the blasting will cut this crap, any suggestions?? I just seen a guy use dry ice, he lays it on, then hits the area with a hammer, then scrapes easily out with a scraper,I just put the issue on the internet it shows the answers(youtube) hope this works for you

Have you tried paint stripper? Try the heat from underneath, that works great for bondo and you don't have to heat up the undercoating as much.

I would think a good sand blasting would be the easiest way. And with the fact that the body is heavy duty you don't have to worry about blowing holes in it or warping it.

I'm not a sandblasting guru but I was told it was hard to get off, I have a friend that will do it for me if I buy the diesel, sand and beer. I'm going to try paint remover vs. heat gun tomorrow, I will keep you posted.

I had the original undercoating on mine and we took it to a commercial sand blasting place and it came out very good. Go to my thread in the restoration section and you can see it. Larry

Gloves!!! That stuff is nasty. Make sure you have good ventilation. I would wear a respirator as well.

I had my gloves on, just took them off for pic, had shop doors open, fumes were not a problem, it's 70 degrees here, gonna try to get some more done tonight. :D
