Well time to start the real dirty work. Yesterday the muffler came out and the rear wiring harness then another 4 hours off and on of degreasing the drive line and pressure washing. Now its time to either blast her or sand and strip cant decide which one to do yet. As you can see from the pictures the mutt rolled off the factory 24087 then the army painted the visible parts of the body 4 color camo. So I plan to do the same the original 24087 is in pretty good shape and there is almost no rust on the under side of the mutt all suspension parts still have the factory black paint so that's a easy repaint really the worst paint is up top. Well free time and money will make my decision for me on how to strip the body of the old paint. Of course the battery compartment needs to be sand blasted so I can do the final metal repair.

Well after splitting my free time between getting another mutt up and running some trips out of town and life in general I got to spend a few hours this Sunday on the battery compartment. Like all good intentions the just cut out the small hole in the floor and replace turned into a 6 inch long hole cutting out the front bulkhead and some of the back bulk head. I will be making a call to the m151 body parts god for a new front bulk head this week and hitting up the local Northern tool for a spot weld cutter and a sand blaster to blast the battery compartment before the new metal goes in. You can also see int he first picture the nice gut that decided to add drain hole with a screwdriver lol oh the things people do

Well on July 3 I had the opportunity to have the mutt blasted so I took it. I was not completely ready as I was still working on replacing metal in the battery compartment but when good weather and the sand blaster man is available you have to take it. It was a very hard day as the sand blaster man did not start till 10:30am by the time he was done and I started laying primer is was 1:30pm and the 103 degree heat index was a killer. I moved the Mutt into the shade and started by the time I was done it was 6:00pm the paint gun felt like it wade 100 lbs and I was soaked and dead.

There were only a couple hidden gems found after the sand blast. 1: Someone had taken a grinder to the side of the hood where the hood numbers normally go. This was more than likely done by the army as the area had good military paint. This left nice grinder marks and for some reason what looks like a hole that had been repaired.
2: Cancer on the passenger front motor mount the cancer is about 6 inches or more above the mount. some little pin holes and a 1/2 hole that goes all the way through so more weld repair to do.

With the nice Photobucket change I will be posting my photo's on the Facebook page I have for the mutt for now.

Looks really nice. Isn't it fun what a year can do?

I was wondering if the four capped holes in the rear floorboard were there to mount ??? At first I thought maybe an M4 mount, but I didn't see any matching holes between the front seats where the pedestal riser mount holes would have been.

Very nice. Towing it though, you want that heavy weight in the front of trailer.

I would bet the trailer is at least 7-10% nose heavy, Mutt is centered on axles but entire trailer is all the way forward so basically the nose of the trailer will be as heavy as the 416 trailer.

Holes in floorboard are undercoating holes and plugs that were put there when the mutt was undercoated. They will also be in several places in the front of the cowl. There is actually a manual for the job.

Thanks for the comments.

No MG mount holes in the body just the undercoating holes is what you are seeing. Only thing added to this mutt from what it came with from the GOV. is the extra mirror and side marker light kit which were done for driving on Houston roads.

As far as the set up for hauling on the trailer goes I have loaded my MB and MBT on the trailer this way many of times. This was the first time loading a M416 and Mutt like this on the trailer. The 416 is loaded with camping gear so its heavier than a empty trailer. The rear wheel of the mutt sits at the start of the dove tail an there is probably a little more tongue weight than needed but trailer rides nice and level. All in all pulls very stable at Texas highway speeds. I dream of a 24 foot trailer one day but for now I am happy with the set up.

No the Huey is only static but the Museums HH-46 and Loach are up and flying now and then.
