New to me m151a2

Unread post by Txjeeper81 » April 7th, 2016, 12:07 pm

Already posted this A2 on G503 before I knew this site existed so many of you may have already seen this A2. So here is the story this M151A2 came from Del Rio Texas and from what I can tell was driven for awhile and parked never to be used again. The Dessert weather has been kind to her as the only rust issue is in the battery compartment (SO FAR) but most exposed rubber is shot. Engine dose turn over but has a frozen water pump, only parts missing off this A2 is the front shackles and mounts and the spare tire retainer plate. After many post on G503 the mighty MUTTGURU and Rickf have the A2 nailed down to being a 1976 contract AM General produced M151A2. Thank you goes out to them for there advice and knowledge.

Cool things about this A2 is that its still in its Army colors and makings with only two coats of paint. First coat 24087 second coat hand painted camo. There's no bad babba fixation done to it besides extended front bumper and the leather seats covers and that someone went to town with a label maker. A2 has a few bends and dings the worst being the driver side around the fuel tank. I hope to work on her some this weekend and will post more pictures.

So while showing off the A2 to a friend with a A1 and talking to him about the Body tag and the help I got from guys on the G503 and here to figuring out the year of manufacture and the correct vin number for the A2 we decided to look at the engine tag and carburetor dates. Engine is June of 1976 and carb is either March of 76 or Aug of 76 its hard to tell if its a 3 or 8. So I think safe to say original engine and dare I say Carb to the A2.

Dose anyone know how close the engine manufacture date would be to the A2 manufacture date? Looking to figure out a month of manufacture I'm shooting for August of 76

I've also decided to paint her back in the camo she left the army in 4 color merdc the summer variant that's if I can mix the light Green to the right or close shade.

Going to try and find information on the 90th ARCOM or 549 MI to figure out the correct unit markings she once wore.

Ok did some research and boy was it a pain everything I found on the interwebs about the units history all starts at WWII and ends in the 60's and starts back up in the 1990's or 2000's. It seems the 1970's and 1980's are not note worthy in the unit history's.
What is comes down to is the unit markings found on the bumper are correct ( 5A 90ARCOM 549MI ) to the jeep. Those units were all at Camp Bulis/Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio during the 1970's and 1980's. Although those units have been re-designated and have new bases the 549 MI and 90th and 5th are still around today.

Well Sunday was a good day with a civy fuel pump a quick rebuild on the carb and a 2 gallon gas can I was able to get the mutt running and take it for a small spin around the yard. I also found out the reason why they stopped driving this mutt the rear drivers hub seems to be missing some bearing I think. As I was driving I could hear a clunking noise when I looked back at the hub I could see it jump so that should be interesting to see whats left in that hub.
Besides the screaming old belts the engine sounded good and did not smoke. I also got the front bumper straightened and repaired just need to get the correct size bolts and shackle mounts.

First and foremost: is that an E-model or a 600?

We are ALWAYS looking at other stuff in the garages! And since I don't see any Porsche's around Horst must be asking about the chopper since he is a pilot.

Thats a MD-600 that belongs to the Museum. Museum has two of them that one which is flyable just needs blades at the moment and the second one which is now a pile of scrap as it crashed on landing (pilot and co pilot walked away just sore the next day). Museum just acquired a HH-46 out of cherry point (Pedro 01) that is flyable and going through inspection at the moment.

on a side note the nice March of 76 carb that came on the jeep I might have to replace do to the fact that who ever rebuilt the carb last screwed a sheet metal screw into the body to hold the throttle linkage on and they threaded a peace of pipe where the inlet filter should be.
