And I bet that the cartoon you refer to back to VN.... would also relate to Korea, WWII, WW1,...etc... Looking forward to seeing the Short times spread....And sorry Rick and I hijacked your thread. We do that on occasion.... Seabee

Re: 1977 A2 Transforming to USAF
I've seen a pic of the Civil Air Patrol sporting a strato blue 151.

Re: 1977 A2 Transforming to USAF
The plan is this.
1) a set of wheels is being powder coated blue.
2) all external parts (from hood, windshield, lights, seats, bumpers, fuel tank, etc) are being removed and repainted.
3) I'll pull the power pack and wrap the wiring.
4) The body will be put on the lift, and the bottom, including the tranny tunnel will be painted.
5) The wheels with a new set of tires, will be put on and it will be rolled into the bay and the outside painted.
6) Once the paint is set, I'll put the power pack back in it, change out all the fluids, and reconnect all the wiring.
7) Reassemble all outside parts.
Test run
9) Final paint touchup, including markings.
10) Ready to go!
I'll put pictures on for all of it.

Re: 1977 A2 Transforming to USAF
With the exception of the early Ford A2's I am pretty sure all of the later A2's had the bottoms painted black.

Wow, thank you for the tidbit, Rick. My plan was to paint the bottom black. Good to know that black is right.

Re: 1977 A2 Transforming to USAF
Since the next one on the rack is a 1970 Ford, what color should that be?

Re: 1977 A2 Transforming to USAF
How about 'Haze Gray" for all us squids!?
Some people are too busy knowing it all to ever learn anything
Re: 1977 A2 Transforming to USAF
Gray would not be a bad idea since it is sort of a grey area when it comes to bottom color for those years. It has been debated for quite a while with many saying "well mine was green" and just as many saying "Well mine was black". If I had to guess I would say that Ford probably did not change their paint methods for the change to the A2 and continued to paint them green. When AMG took over they went to black.
Now, Let the paint wars begin!

Just a comment, 1973 non emission AMG, green with undercoating.

Re: 1977 A2 Transforming to USAF
Yesterday I went into full conversion mode. The wheels are at the powder coat place. I took a truck load of parts to the painter.
Today I have to put an engine back in the 1964 Kaiser M151 to get it off the cherry picker. Then I can use it to pull the engine on the A2 to get it prepped to paint.
Here is what I'm starting with......

Re: 1977 A2 Transforming to USAF
Thats a standard retrofit for use in Europe where the smaller A1 rear lights were considered inadequate.
The bucket mounts are still available.
