I turned over the engine with the spark plugs out. Everything working properly. Put the spark plugs in and valve cover back on. Gave her power and cranked the starter. Nothing..

I shot a little QuickStart into the carb and it gave a little "umpf" and then still no sign of catching.

What should be my next move? Take the carburetor apart to check the float?

See if you have good spark.
Check fuel flow at carb
Fresh gas
Good batteries
Make sure carb is n good shape and no stuck float.

I make service calls.

I'm with Fil, make sure you have fire at all cylinders, if it hit with the starting fluid, then on to the carb.

I have seen several bad "NOS" distributor caps recently. Something to think about.

I'm looking to replace the electrical fuel pump on my mutts. How does this AIRTEX 60577 performs i.e. cuts the mustard?

Thanks Joe

Works exactly the same as the A2 mechanical fuel pump. It is basically the same pump except it does not have the nipple for the vent hose to the air cleaner.

Finally had time to remove the old electronic fuel pump, hook up the new mechanical fuel pump (Airtex 60577) and run the gas lines. I installed clear gas filters on both sides of the new pump and had the inline stuck into a gas can full of fresh gas as you suggested. I was working alone but as I turned the engine over, I could see gas coming into the new clear filter just before it got to the carb. Then she coughed and started up!

I had some backfiring and she wouldn’t idle on her own. I noticed when I was tightening up the spark plugs that there was a little play in the distributor, so I moved it one way and tried it. Then the other way and she settled right down .. no more backfiring.

So now my last piece is to fill up the gas tank with fresh gas, start her up, and get her back into the jeep garage for the winter. When I have time next spring or summer, I’ll need to do a complete brake job.

I’m sure you have a few ideas for the winter. I can easily get out there once a week to start her up and let her run a while. Or would it be better to mothball it, take off the carb and send that to Florida during the winter?

What a wonderful feeling to have the jeep fire up! Thanks again for all your good advice and help.

Clean the gas tank before you put new gas in to it.
Too much potential junk inside there to risk going into carb.
