Rear Brake Seal Question

Postby m75 » March 13th, 2018, 4:10 pm

Using the seal kit for installing the rear brake backing plate and wheel bearing housing. Are both of the items pictured required, or only the rubber seal with embedded spring? TM only implies the rubber seal. What would be a recommended sealant to use?

Go to my Alley Cat M151 restoration thread about 3/5ths of the way down on page 7. Lots of good photos for you to refer to. Link below will take you to page 7. You'll need both and the brake backing plate goes on BEFORE your install the flange that holds the seal. I didn't use any sealer on it chiefly because I think it's totally unnecessary. These are extremely tight fits. Hope this helps.

I was going to make a suggestion but go to the link TJ put up and scroll down to where he is installing that seal and you will see why you need both pieces. This is why we keep TJ around!

<an, that thread is exactly the type of information that keeps me glued to this site daily. Time to re-approach what I've done, and follow the adventures of the Alley Cat!

I returned to the garage, backed up the previous work a little, and used the referenced post to properly address the inner seals and prep for the outer seals tomorrow. Also assembled the brakes onto the backing plates, ready for wrapping this end of the truck up Wednesday. Thanks to all!

Well, a day in the garage is always a good day. A learning experience as well. I finished the rear brakes, supports, etc. Friday will bring the son in law over to help replace some cranky brake lines and hoses, then bleed the brakes.

After finishing the rears today, a nagging thought was rattling around in my head and I decided to pull the front wheels off and double-check that work done earlier. Of course, the lessons continued, as the seals on the front needed tweaking from the first install I did.

But, with all said and done today, the A2 is sitting on new tires backed by completely new brakes, bearings, bushings, steering and shocks. Even the rims are NOS.

Anything further will go over to the restoration page that I have there. I really appreciate the assistance from the G!

Good to see you're moving along with it. Hope to see some new photos of the process, or even the finished work. Once you've done it, it doesn't seem all that hard and everything makes sense, eh?

Cheers,
TJ
